HOW TO GET RID OF ALMOST ANYTHING
HOUSEHOLD GARBAGE 
Douglas County has one of the few remaining free dumps in the country. Please use it. The closest disposal site to Roseburg is at the McLain Avenue Exit (Exit 121) from I-5 just south of Roseburg. The transfer station at the landfill will recycle motor oil, car batteries, plastic, paper and metals. They will take appliances, but charge for them.

 OTHER JUNK 
CAR BATTERIES – Most battery sellers will take them, even if you aren’t buying a new one. Douglas Welding Supply, 6724446, 1223 NE Cedar St. will pay $0.50 a battery for regular car batteries. CARDBOARD - Sunrise Enterprises, 6726515, will recycle cardboard. It can also be recycled at the Douglas County Landfill.

 JUNK CARS 
The cheapest way to get rid of a junk car is at a junk yard. Auto dismantlers will sell some parts and crush the rest for scrap, which means you don't pay full towing and disposal charges. Some helpful people can be found at Clyde from Glide (957-5597), Union Gap

COMPUTERS, STEREOS, TVs, CELL PHONES, ETC. - Monitors and More Computer Recycling Center, 1900 SE Main (back side of the Southgate Center), 673-3347. Some schools will accept computer donations. DEAD ANIMALS - Carcass disposal is available from Chuck Caylor, 672-6296 (shop) or 673-9868 (home). Please don’t call him at home in the middle of the night. EXPLOSIVES - Call the Oregon State Police Bomb Squad, 800-452-7888 or 503-378-6517. If it is something you can handle yourself, they will give you instructions. If it requires an expert, they have them. FIREARMS AND AMMUNITION Unwanted firearms or ammunition can be donated to the Roseburg Rod and Gun Club. Phone the RR&GC president Russ Varney, 957-0891 for details. GOOD JUNK - We all have stuff we don’t want that is too valuable to throw away. Please donate it to the charity of your choice. Some possibilities are: Sunrise Enterprises (672-6515), Salvation Army (672-6679), Saving Grace "Gracie's"Animal Shelter (6721473), Goodwill (673-6032), church rummage sales or your local school district. HAZARDOUS WASTE (poisons, pesticides, solvents) - There is no local disposal, but Douglas County has a reciprocal agreement with the Lane County landfill. Phone 541-682-4120 for an appointment. The disposal site is the Glenwood transfer station south of Eugene. An appointment is required, and fees are charged.

If you are a business, phone 541-682-3828 to arrange for small scale disposal of industrial hazardous waste. LEAVES – From November through January, weep dead leaves into a pile behind the curb. Street crews will pick them up and recycle them into compost at the landfill. DO NOT burn leaves. Roseburg's air quality is bad enough as it is. The rest of the year, bag the leaves and haul them to the landfill for recycling. LIVE ANIMALS - Roseburg contracts with Douglas County Animal Control, 440-4327. MOTOR OIL - Up to 5 gallons of motor oil at a time can be recycled at any Douglas County transfer station. DO NOT pour used motor oil on the ground, down a drain, or put a jug full of it in the garbage. Using motor oil to "settle dust" on a road has been illegal for years. It either ends up in the river or in the water table. OLD BUILDINGS AND BUILDING SUPPLIES - Heartwood Resources, 3495 Old Hwy. 99 South, recycles old buildings and resells the materials. They will often dismantle and dispose of old buildings cheaper, though not necessarily faster, than any other method. Phone 679-1777 for a bid. If you are in a hurry, any excavation contractor can crunch up a building and haul it to the landfill. Check your Yellow Pages. PAINT - Heartwood Resources, 3495 Old Hwy. 99 South, will recycle latex paints. Phone 679-1777 for details. Similar colors are

mixed together and used to repaint low income housing. Paint has to be solid for the landfill to take it. Leave the top open until it dries, or mix it with kitty litter and spread it out until it dries. If you have less than 25 gallons of solvent based paint, stripper, or other hazardous waste to dispose of, Douglas County has a reciprocal agreement with the Lane County landfill. Phone 541-682-4120 for an appointment. The disposal site is the Glenwood transfer station south of Eugene. An appointment is required, and fees are charged. TIRES - Douglas County Landfill - The disposal fee depends on the size of the tire. They will not take tires on rims. TIRES ON RIMS – Tire companies like Big O or Les Schwab will dispose of tires on rims for a minimal charge. WOODY DEBRIS - Christmas trees, tree prunings, old lumber, pallets, any wood with nothing larger than a heavy staple, can be recycled at the Douglas County Landfill. Don't forget that the landfill is closed on Mondays, Tuesdays and Holidays. Call 957-7033.
