SPA CHOCOLATE™
Treat Yourself to Good Health
TIDBITS: Bissinger’s Handcrafted Chocolatier energized the delicious world of chocolate when it introduced Spa Chocolate™, a seven-piece collection of all-natural handcrafted dark chocolate creations handpicked for those looking for a daily chocolate indulgence. Today, chocolate lovers can enjoy 21 days of guilt free-indulgence with Spa Chocolates Weeks 1, 2 and 3. In fact, when eaten in moderation, Spa Chocolate can become a satisfying part of a balanced, healthful eating plan. Slowly eating a luxurious piece of chocolate, savoring the textures and flavors, can help people make it through the morning, afternoon or evening without overeating.

Bissinger’s has collaborated with Connie Diekman, MEd, RD, LD, FADA, president-elect for the American Dietetic Association, to handpick healthful fruits and nuts for both Spa Chocolate assortments. The ingredients in Spa Chocolate could potentially reduce the risk of cancer, slow the aging process and contribute to overall improvement in cardiovascular health. The dark chocolate used in Spa Chocolate is good source of antioxidants, which neutralize oxygen free radicals produced by the body’s metabolism. These free radicals can damage or destroy healthy cells, thus making a food’s antioxidant power very important.

A key Spa Chocolate ingredient is Bissinger’s traditional dark chocolate. Researchers at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign recently tested Bissinger’s dark chocolate to determine its Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity (ORAC) rating. The ORAC scale gauges a food’s antioxidant level, which in general terms is the ability to protect cells from the damaging effects of free radicals.

Bissinger’s Handcrafted Chocolatier has been handcrafting fine confections for more than 350 years. The Bissinger family began creating their fine delicacies in 17th-century Paris, and at that time European nobility, heads of state including Ludwig of Bavaria and the Rothschilds were all loyal Bissinger’s enthusiasts. Bissinger's confections were once enjoyed by King Louis XIV and were served as a gift by Napoleon Bonaparte to his beloved Josephine upon his return from battle. In fact, Karl Frederic Bissinger, the company's namesake, was named the Confiseur Imperial, or "Candy Maker of the Empire," for excellence in the confectionery arts by Emperor Louis Napoleon.

Karl Bissinger left France in 1845, bringing his loyal master candy maker and all of the Bissinger family candy making secrets to the United States near Cincinnati, Ohio. In 1927, his son, also named Karl, opened the Bissinger’s candy making kitchens and first Bissinger’s shop in Saint Louis on McPherson Avenue. That historic store, just blocks from the new Bissinger’s: A Chocolate Experience, will close this summer, but a replica will be re-built in the popular City Museum, for chocolate lovers of all ages to enjoy for years to come.

Bissinger’s handcrafted confections can be purchased at its four retail locations (three in St. Louis, MO and one in Edina, MN), through national catalogs, by calling 800.325.8881, or visiting us online at www.bissingers.com. A handful of Bissinger’s products can be found locally at Straub’s Fine Grocers, across the country at select Whole Food Markets as well as upscale spas and resorts. Bissinger’s headquarters is located at 3983 Gratiot Street in St. Louis, Missouri. ###
