IRON CLAWS
Written and Directed by Hannah Mulder

Wednesday 30 May – Saturday 2 June 2012
Press Performance: Wednesday 30 May at 1.30pm

An award-winning version of a Nordic fairy tale – featuring stunning puppetry alongside live action -
is set to delight audiences at The Studio at the Royal Exchange Theatre.

The Wrong Crowd Theatre Company - a new company formed by writer/director Hannah
Mulder and designer/puppet director Rachael Canning – presents THE GIRL WITH THE
IRON CLAWS from Wednesday 30 May to Saturday 2 June.

The show – which is aimed audiences aged 8 and above - debuted at the 2011 Edinburgh Fringe
Festival to rave reviews and a Total Theatre Award nomination.

It is an inventive take on a dark Nordic myth, which shares its roots with BEAUTY AND THE
BEAST. At its heart is the wilful daughter of a king, who feels like a misfit. She dares to defy her
family and to follow her longing. One night a compelling dream leads her deep into the forest, where
an encounter with a white bear sets her on a fateful path she could never have anticipated

The show fuses puppetry, live action, music and strong storytelling to delight, provoke and inspire
audiences, and remind them of the wonder of live performance.

                                                                                             more/…

Rachael Canning’s work includes design and puppet direction for a number of productions
including MAGICAL NIGHT for the Royal Opera House, THE CITY MADAM for the RSC and
INTO THE WOODS at Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre. Hannah Mulder has written and
directed shows including JUNCTION at Theatre 503, FACE at Camden Arts Centre, THE JAILER’S
TALE at artsdepot and WHERE THE LIGHT COMES THROUGH THE TREES at Exeter Northcott.

Talking about THE GIRL WITH THE IRON CLAWS, Hannah and Rachael said “For our first
show we’re retelling a powerful tale. We’re passionate about these old stories and what they have
to offer modern audiences, both old and young. Many of these rich stories were sanitised by the
Victorians and we want to explore earlier versions and inject some of that juice, lust and fire back
into them.”

The includes Clare Fraenkel (Girl), Chris Macdonald (Valemon), Arran Glass (Blacksmith and
King) and Laura Cairns (Troll Queen, Sister, Crone, Blacksmith’s wife).

                                                                                                 ends/
