Canada Summer Games Preview 2009
By Brendan Arnold – Manager High Performance
The Ontario Cycling Team heading to the 2009 Canada Summer Games in PEI is made up of some of the best
Road and Mountain bike athletes in Canada. Seven of the twelve represented Canada in 2008/09. Athletes on
this team come from as far as Thunder Bay. The athletes will compete in both Mountain Bike and Road and will
be a force to be reckoned with come August.
The process of selecting a team has been a three year venture with all identified athletes being involved in
testing through the Canadian Sport Centre, multiple camps and races. The process began in 2006 when the
OCA applied for a Quest for Gold grant to subsidize the salary for a full time Provincial Coach. The main focus of
this position was success for Ontario at the 2009 CSG. Denise Kelly took this role by the horns and started to
contact coaches and athletes regarding their interest in the Games and what they would need to do to be
involved… Denise always said, “We want people who WANT to be there”.
Mikaela Kofman from Toronto is the number two U23 Mountain Biker in Canada; she is very excited for the
games and is very competitive on both bikes so she will be in the hunt for some hardware. Another athlete to
watch is Denise Ramsden who recently finished second at National Championships in both the road race and
time trial and has raced in France racing for Canada in the lead up to the games. Laura Bietola is the youngest
rider on the team and follows on her sister, Kelly’s, footsteps who was part of the 2005 CSG Team. With
National Championship, Canada Cup and World Cup wins on the mountain bike circuit, she will be giving older
athletes a run for the medals.
In the men’s category it is Kingston’s Bryson Bowers that will be gunning for a gold medal in the time trial.
Bryson broke his back just two years ago and recovered to take the silver at Nationals in 2008. The other rider
to watch on the mountain bike trails, is Cam Jette. He recently finished second at both the National
Championships and a Canada Cup race and is hitting great form coming into the Games. A dark horse to watch
in the road race, will be Jamie Riggs. He was brilliant at National Championships this year and wants it bad.
Jamie might be hitting some blistering form come CSG.
Not only is this the team to beat but they are also the team to meet, so when you are in PEI come and say hi to
the gang and cheer them on in their “Quest for Gold”.
Team Ontario brings probably the most experienced coaching staff to CSG. Denise Kelly, Head Coach, is on
her fourth games and is ready to win some gold. Denise is a former National Team cyclist and knows what it
takes to win. Mike Garrigan is the Mountain Bike Coach and is still an Elite competitor. Mike has competed for
Canada on more than a few occasions. Sophie Radecki is the WIC apprentice and as a former athlete she bring
knowledge, experience and a focus to this team. Mechanic, Scotty Kelly is a National Team mechanic who
brings knowledge, hard work and humour to the table. Scotty is one of the best mechanics in the country and
compliments this team very well. The Manager of the team is a former BMX World Cup athlete, Brendan Arnold
who will lead this team in PEI.
