Belle Plaine Community Development Corporation Minutes from September 26, 2006 Meeting President Zahradnik called the Belle Plaine Community Development Corporation board meeting to order at 5:15 p.m. Directors present were: Dale Weeda, Jerilyn DeRaad, Bill Daily, Reece Dodd, Jodi Bermel, and Joe Schwab. Guest, Brandi Beck. Jennifer introduced Jerilyn DeRaad who is willing to take the directors seat vacated by Eric Hrabak. Moved by Weeda seconded by Schwab to except Jerilyn as the new director. Carried. Minutes of the last meeting were reviewed. Need to amend the report from the Organization Committee to read: Hank and Brad will put together list of potential donors in hopes of raising an additional $50,000 per year for the next three years. Moved by Schwab seconded by Weeda to approve as amended. Carried Treasurer’s report, moved by Daily seconded by Schwab to approve as submitted. Carried. Committee Reports: Organization – Hank and Brad will be meeting with potential donors and also will be sending out a letter to some property/business owners who do not reside in Belle Plaine Promotion – Town Hall Meeting & Picnic, attended by about 62 people. Extra food donated to Senior dining and Historical Society. Iowa Tent Theater, Jodi reported it would quite costly with little return. All agreed to look into other possibilities, i.e. Beer Garden at Civil War Days, Street Dance (Fridays after Five), something to tie in with Jumbo Well Days. Jodi will check into activities. Business Improvement – Joe met with Dan Doubler who is very interested in starting an establishment that offers pool, foosball, darts, small bowling. He would need quite a bit of space, so they discussed the possibility of two builds side by side. It was suggested that Doubler present some kind of business plan. It was reported that there has been some interest shown in the Lincoln Café, no commitments to date. The Palco building has been sold and will soon host a guitar shop. Design – Bill reported that the city is going forward with the streetscape project. Consultants and engineers are being contacted. BPCDC will be involved in the planning. Easter Egg Hunt – No report. Christmas Movie – Set for the first weekend in December. Movie, Santa and goodie bags for kids. Christmas Decorations – Have some on order. Some of the older lighted decorations will need some bulbs replaced. Bill will talk to Sue Riherd about ordering bulbs. Bill looking into year round banners for light poles. Civil War Days – Profit of about $1,000 reported. Modern Woodman will donate and additional $2,500. Next years dates will be September 15 & 16. More re-enactors are expected for next year. It was suggested that a Beer Garden/Tent be added next year. Old Business: Bill reported estimates for further cleaning of the Friendly. Serv Pro was a bit lower than Service Master 380 however Bill suggested we use Service Master 380 because he felt they could do a more thorough job. Moved by Daily seconded by Dodd to use Service Master 380. Carried The price for the Friendly Tavern was discussed. It was decided to set it at $3,000 as is and $10,000 after it’s been cleaned. Bill Daily has applied for a grant from Hamburger Helper for funds for the building. The Community Solutions group will meet October 11th at the Community Center. Jennifer said it’s not been well attended. We need to help keep that group going in order to do what’s best for Belle Plaine. Brad Cook is scheduled to attend the Belle Plaine Community Schools board meeting in October. New Business: Moved by Daily seconded by Bermel to approve sale of Maidrite building to Double Take Design, Inc.. Jennifer reported the need for more participation from all working committees. There is a need to keep the web page updated, but because of her work schedule Jennifer is unable to do so, on a regular basis. Jodi suggested that some students from the high school might be interested in working on the web page as part of their Independent Work Study. Jodi will contact the teacher who is responsible. She also stated that the presence of all directors at the monthly meetings is critical to the success of the organization. Correspondence: Alliant Energy denied request for grant. Will submit another application in Janurary. Priority One payment of $2,500 due and has been paid. Hank and Bill will attend annual meeting in October. Jennifer presented a letter from Henry B. Tippie. Mr. Tippie suggested that the BPCDC make more of an effort to work with existing businesses. He thinks it would be a good move to meet the management at Benco to show appreciation for their on-going business efforts in Belle Plaine. Jennifer will respond to Mr. Tippie. Moved by Schwab second by Weeda to adjourn. Carried, meeting adjourned 6:50 P.M.
