Volunteer Opportunities
Volunteers are a valuable and integral part of promoting Kidspace Children’s Museum’s mission of enriching the lives of children. Volunteers serve to promote awareness, provide good public relations, insure the safety of all museum guests, and enhance the learning experience. Kidspace is currently looking for volunteers to assist in the following areas: Exhibits The museum seeks observant volunteers to be stationed at various exhibits to insure the safety of all museum guests. Exhibit Volunteer duties include: Greet museum guests. Provide information regarding exhibits, facilities, and upcoming events. Monitor exhibits for safety and reporting hazards. Adhere to and enforce safety policies and procedures. Assist with crowd control. Special Events Special Event Volunteers may assist at a number of on and offsite events sponsored by the museum. Special Event Volunteer duties include: Lead group activities. Assist and participate in program event set up and clean up. Education Education Volunteer duties include: Facilitate visitor use of museum exhibits in both indoor and outdoor learning environments. Assist with facilitating demonstrations and art activities including program set up and clean up. Monitor exhibits for safety. Assist with crowd management. Provide excellent customer service and handling of visitor inquiries. Nature Exchange The museum is gathering a pool of volunteers to facilitate the museum’s Nature Exchange exhibit, a unique learning environment intended to motivate science interest and understanding through the personal “trading”, collecting, and sharing of information about found natural items. Nature Exchange Volunteer duties include: Facilitate trades with guests by initiating discussions. Create and update computer accounts for collectors. Assist guests with research in the Nature Exchange resource library, and online research services.

Occasional general office work between the hours of 3-5. Assistance as runners between booths and headquarters for October fest, selling souvenirs, assisting with the prizes.

Healthy Kids Paul Bandy (818) 548-7931 General clerical work such as mailing and stuffing envelopes. Months of Oct.Nov.: put boxes together for annual Oral Hygiene education program. USC mobile dental clinic in July for a week where the volunteers are needed for translations. Minimum age requirement: 15. They are looking for volunteers to help out with the exhibits, art projects, story time, etc. for 3.5 to 4 hours a week. Open on weekends. Shifts are from 9am to 1pm or 1 pm to 5 pm. Volunteers are needed to assist children ages 5 and up with their homework. The center is open Monday thru Friday 7am to 6:30pm.

Community Development / Beautification
City of Glendale Community Development Veronica Padron (Neighborhood Services) (818) 548-2110 Students need to submit an application to the City Human Resources department. Each department then selects its volunteers based on its needs. Several Community Clean up days throughout the year (supervised groups). Adopt-A-Block program: supplies are provided by the city. Contact the city office to enroll in this program. Teachers and key clubs may sponsor the Adopt-A-Block Program in order to provide supervision.

More frequent volunteers can be assigned the responsibility to open the toy carts where children can play with the toys. They request 2-4 hours for each day of volunteer service. Students can volunteer as tour guides on the 2nd and 3rd Saturday of the month. They may assist with track work and they will also be volunteering at the Holden's Corner as keepers where they will also read books to kids and monitor children's interactive learning with the toys at the corner.

Work with the park rangers to design and construct new trails and to maintain Glendale's extensive trail system, keeping them safe for all who use them. Ages 14 and up. Saturdays. The organization is headquartered at Coldwater Canyon park. Students can assist with trail maintenance which entails weeding, mulching and clean up. Students can also work at the nursery propagating seeds and helping with other nursery duties. The organization assists neighborhoods with plantings on weekends and they can use the help of student volunteers on the planting sites. Trail, camp ground and picnic area maintenance. Work related to wildlife habitat. Open 7 days a week 8-4:30. Need to apply.

Volunteers needed for May 21, 2005 "Area Games" at Glendale High to assist the athletes in tennis, basketball, track & field, bacce ball, swimming or to keep scores or be a runner. Also: basketball program in Burbank every Sat. 8-10 am from Jan. to June where students can help with the practice. There are also fundraisers and a 5K-10K walk/run where volunteers are needed.
