Key Note Speaker: Dr. Dan Siegel

Dr. Siegel will be presenting on: Parenting from the Inside Out: How A Deeper
Self-Understanding Can Help You Raise Children Who Thrive and Attachment,
Mindfulness, and Security: The Development of Integration and Regulation.

Drawing upon stunning new findings in neurobiology and attachment research, Dr.
Siegel will present about interpersonal relationships and how they directly impact
the development of the brain.

Dr. Siegel will be streamed in live from the UW Infant, Early Childhood, and Family
Mental Health Certificate Program in Madison, for an interactive presentation. Dr.
Siegel is currently a clinical professor of psychiatry at the UCLA of Medicine.

Afternoon Breakout Sessions: Participants will have the opportunity to
choose one breakout session to attend in the afternoon. Sign up for the breakout
sessions will be done upon the time of registration on the day of the Seminar.

Breakout Session 1: The Impact of Complex Trauma on Early
Childhood Development
This training is an introduction to the different types of complex trauma experienced by infants,
toddlers, and young children. Specifically it will focus on repeated exposures to traumatic events and
the subsequent biological, emotional, and behavioral changes that are often observed in children.
This session will provide an overview of evidence-based research related to early childhood trauma,
effective interventions, and what we can do as professionals working with children who may have
been exposed to trauma.

Presenter: Tricia Schutz, MSW LCSW is a Psychotherapist and Infant Mental Health Consultant
specializing in the areas of infant and early childhood and trauma informed care. Tricia obtained her
Master of Social Work degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2006 and was a member
of the 2011-2012 cohort of the Infant, Early Childhood and Family Mental Health Certificate Program.
Tricia is currently an Infant Mental Health Consultant as part of the Wisconsin Infant Mental Health
Consultation Preparation Project.

Breakout Session 2: Early Relationships Matter!
New parents are bombarded with various educational courses that they can take to help them
prepare for the birth of their child, however there is often little information available on what to
expect in terms of the early relationship that forms between a parent and a child. This presentation
will focus on information that parents can use to help them begin to lay the foundation for
developing a healthy relationship with their newborn/infant/toddler. This presentation is
appropriate for all parents and professionals that work with parents of infants & toddlers in any

Presenter: Sarah Kravick is a licensed Marriage & Family Therapist whose practice consists of
working with children, families and individuals of all ages. Sarah provides mental health
consultation for the Portage Project (Birth to 3) and reflective consultation for home visiting
programs. Infancy and early childhood have been a focus of her work and education, most recently
completing the UW Infant, Early Childhood and Family Mental Health Certificate program in May of

Breakout Session 3: EBCD: Early Brain and Child Development
Safe, stable and nurturing relationships play a critical role in building healthy brains. Plasticity makes
the developing brain especially sensitive to early experiences - particularly early relationships. Brain
development is also a cumulative process, with simple connections and circuits forming the
foundation for more complex pathways and behaviors later on.

This session reviews strategies and activities designed to foster the relationships integral to building
healthy brains, particularly within the first 1,000 days of life. There will also be an overview on the "5
R's" of early literacy. Investment in early learning provides a healthy start and a solid foundation for
school success and life-long productivity.
Presenter: Kia LaBracke is the executive director of the Wisconsin Chapter of the American
Academy of Pediatrics (WIAAP) and the WIAAP Foundation. She co-chairs the Aligned Screening and
Assessment project team for the Early Childhood Advisor Council (ECAC) in line with the Wisconsin
Early Childhood Collaborating Partners' (WECCP) Healthy Children committee. Ms. LaBracke
advocates for a variety of child health initiatives at the state level, including developmental screening
and assessment, mental health, obesity prevention and promotion of the medical home. She
graduated from Ripon College and she has an expertise in marketing, public relations, product
management and social media. She lives in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin with her husband and three

Breakout Session 4: Attachment quality, co-regulation of affect, and the
development of emotional regulation.
Participants will learn about attachment formation, quality, and behaviors in infancy and early
childhood. Patterns of child attachment will be described, including the ways in which these patterns
manifest themselves throughout childhood and adulthood as attitudes, expectations, and
interpretations of the social world. Discussion topics will also include mechanisms of affect
regulation, the five basic brain systems involved in parenting, and the impact of blocked caregiving.
Clinical implications of this material will be highlighted throughout the training.

Presenter: Theresa (Terry) Petrenchik, Ph.D., OTR/L is owner of Ready2LiveandLearn, a private
pediatric therapy clinic located in Appleton, WI. She is also a clinical assistant professor at McMaster
University in the School of Rehabilitation Science and Adjunct Professor at Nova Southeastern
University in the Occupational Therapy Doctoral Programs (infant and child mental health). Dr.
Petrenchik is a published author and presenter as well as a licensed occupational therapist, child
mental health consultant, trauma informed care champion, and a parent and family coach.

meet regional and statewide agency representatives during the
networking hour. They will be sharing information and resources about
early childhood mental health in Room A170. We’ll conclude our day
