Harold S. Schwartz Music Scholarship Program

In 1997, The Opera Club of The Villages, in an effort to encourage the study of music and to aid talented students to achieve their educational goals, established a music scholarship program. It was named after the founder of The Villages, Harold S. Schwartz. In the past two years, over $50,000 has been awarded in scholarships to graduates of Lake, Marion and Sumter Counties. During the school year, applications are sent to schools in the tri -county area. Students wishing to apply for the scholarships must be graduating seniors with a grade point average of 3.0 or above, and must intend to pursue the study of music in college/university. The student must complete the application and submit it along with an essay and two letters of recommendation. The submissions are reviewed and qualified applicants are invited to audition before the Scholarship Judges of the Opera Club of The Villages. On the day of the audition, each applicant is first interviewed by the panel of judges and then is required to perform. The judges are all knowledgeable musicians. After all the interviews and performances, the judges vote on the applicants deemed to be most worthy to receive scholarships. This year, the application deadline is February 21, 2009. The auditions are scheduled for Saturday, March 7 and Saturday, March 13 from 9:00 AM to noon at the Church On the Square in The Villages. The public is welcome to attend. At a later date the winners will be requested to perform for The Opera Club of The Villages at the "Showcase of Talent" program, where the award certificates are presented. In addition to the monetary award, the scholarship committ ee has the privilege of offering master classes for one week at a conservatory in the area of Piedmonte, Italy. The prestigious Vercelli's Orchestra, Camerata Ducale, who has performed in The Villages for the past three years, has offered this unique opportunity to our top scholarship winner. Ethan Tripp, a freshman at the University of Florida, was the winner selected in 2008 to attend the master class during his spring break in 2009.
