FIMO CHRISTMAS CARDS This project is specifically designed for KEY STAGE 3 encompassing key aspects of the national curriculum Requiring the pupils to work as individuals as well as part of a team and making pupils explore and experiment with the following elements:DESIGN, PATTERN, SHAPE & FORM, MARKETING, BUSINESS PLANS, IMAGINATION. Encourages pupils to understand and research a project as a team from the outset. Investigating and recording procedures and ideas through an orderly process, putting together a work plan and creating an efficient and profit making business through group decisions. Enabling the class to use their communication and business skills, imagination and creative talents to produce goods to be sold. Encourages pupils to experiment and develop their ideas and business skills. Making art pieces that require a range of techniques, tools, team work and design. Encourages pupils to design and make Greeting Cards. Making the group investigate, develop and organise the design, manufacture, packaging and sale processes and customer base. KEY STAGE 3 Christmas Cards Seasonal cards have become a big part of our lives over the past centuries. Although the examples shown are Christmas designs, many different cultures send cards to mark important occasions in their own religious calendars. People send cards to mark many occasions :• Hanukah, Birthdays, Easter, Pass over & Christmas. And from many different Cultures:• Muslim, Hindu ,Christian, Jewish etc.etc. Every age, country and culture have developed their own designs and reasons for sending greeting cards. Visit your local library or museum and gather as much information as you can about cards, what materials were used and why people sent them. Also look at the reasons behind their use within different cultures, for example :DID YOU KNOW? The Valentine card was very popular in Victorian Times, with ladies taking great time and care to make personalised cards for their sweethearts. Post cards have developed over the years and many people still collect the different styles from Britain and around the world. People used to have their photographs taken on special occasions and would send them to family and friends with a written greeting. YOUR PROJECT The objective of this project is to design and make a series of Christmas Cards using FIMO SOFT that can be sold at your school fete. Begin your study by collecting information on the history of cards from your local library and museum. • What designs should you use and why? • How many designs should you produce? • How much should each card cost? • How should the cards be packaged? • What materials should you use? • What processes can you put in place to ensure a good profit? • Should you work as a production line e.g. • Should one person fold the card and pass it to the next to • Stick the back ground on and pass it to the next to • Add the Fimo design etc. etc. etc. Collate all your research in your scrap book, sit down and have a good look at all your findings WARNING! Do not give components or completed toys to young children. CHRISTMAS CARDS You will need :Glitter Fimo Card Old wrapping paper Felt pens Glue These cards are made by choosing a Christmas carol, then designing and making a Fimo model, based on the song. The backgrounds on the cards are made by using old wrapping paper and writing out the words of the carol around the design using a Gold or Silver Staedtler gel pen. The carols used on the cards are : We Three Kings ( With Three Crowns) Christmas Tree (With Christmas Tree) Little Town of Bethlehem ( With Star) Hark The Herald Angels ( With Angel) While Shepherds Watched ( With Sheep) The Star, Christmas Tree and Crowns are made by rolling out a flat piece of Fimo and cutting out and using the templates provided. Choose Christmas wrapping paper that fits the words of your carol and use as a background to your Fimo designs. Copy the words of the carol using a Silver or Gold pen as this makes the card look even more festive. HOW TO MAKE THE CHRISTMAS TREE You will need :Glitter Fimo Card Old wrapping paper Felt pens Glue These cards are made by choosing a Christmas carol and making a Fimo model, based on the hymn. The backgrounds on the cards are made by using old wrapping paper and writing out the carol. 1. Using the template provided, trace the Christmas Tree design onto a blank sheet of paper using a soft pencil. 2. Knead a small amount of Green Glitter Fimo between your hands until it is soft and easy to work with. 3. Roll flat and press gently over the pencil design. 4. Turn the sheet of Fimo over, and the pencil image will have transferred to the Fimo. Cut around the design. 5. Knead a small amount of Red, Silver and Gold Glitter Fimo between your hands until it is soft and easy to work with. Roll into small balls and press gently onto the tree to make baubles. 6. Place in a domestic oven and bake for 20 - 30 minutes at 130 degrees C / 265 degrees F. 7. Once cooled, remove from the oven. Decorate a piece of card by cutting a small square of Christmas wrapping paper and sticking it in the middle of the card. Write the words of your favourite carol around the wrapping paper using a Gold or Silver pen. Remember, use your best handwriting! Using craft glue, stick your Fimo design in the centre of the decorated card. Make the ‘Christmas Star’ and ‘Three Kings’ cards by following steps 1,2,3,4, 6 and 7 HOW TO MAKE THE ANGEL You will need :Glitter Fimo Card Old wrapping paper Felt pens Glue These cards are made by choosing a Christmas carol and making a Fimo model, based on the hymn. The backgrounds on the cards are made by using old wrapping paper and writing out the carol. 1. The Angel is made by putting together a series of flat pieces, made using the template provided. To make the body and arms, roll out Glitter Blue Fimo and cut out the shapes. The hands are two small balls of Silver Fimo pressed into the end of the sleeves. Decorate the dress by rolling a thin sausage of Red Glitter Fimo and pressing on in a wavy line. 2. Press the arms onto the body. 3. Make a halo by rolling a small ball of Anthracite Fimo between your hands and pressing into a flat circle with your thumb. 4. The face is in silver Fimo rolled into a ball and flattened into an oval with your thumb, draw two eyes and a big smile using a cocktail stick. Press the face onto the halo. 5. Press the head onto the body. 6. Roll out a piece of Gold Fimo and cut out the wing shapes using the template provided. Roll out a thin sausage of Gold Fimo and place around the head for the hair. 7. Place in a domestic oven and bake for 20 - 30 minutes at 130 degrees C / 265 degrees F. 8. Once cooled, remove from the oven. Decorate a piece of card by cutting a small square of Christmas wrapping paper and sticking it in the middle of the card. Write the words of your favourite carol around the wrapping paper using a Gold or Silver pen. Remember, use your best handwriting! Using craft glue, stick your Fimo design in the centre of the decorated card. HOW TO MAKE THE SHEEP You will need :Glitter Fimo Card Old wrapping paper Felt pens Glue These cards are made by choosing a favourite Christmas carol , then designing and making a Fimo model, based on the hymn. The backgrounds on the cards are made by using old wrapping paper and writing out the words of the carol. 1. Knead a small amount of Fimo between your hands until it is soft and easy to work with. 2. In the first design, the sheep’s body is made by rolling out a thin sausage shape of silver Fimo and curling it up into the body shape. 3. The head is an oval shape with two smaller oval shapes pressed on for ears. Draw the face using a cocktail stick, with two eyes and a big smile. 4. The legs are two small sausage shapes pressed onto the body. 5. Place in a domestic oven and bake for 20 - 30 minutes at 130 degrees C / 265 degrees F. 6. Once cooled, remove from the oven. Decorate a piece of card by cutting a small square of Christmas wrapping paper and sticking it in the middle of the card. Write the words of your favourite carol around the wrapping paper using a Gold or Silver pen. Remember, use your best handwriting! Using craft glue, stick your Fimo design in the centre of the decorated card. CHRISTMAS CAROL CARDS TEMPLATES The Star template was made using the same technique that would be used to make a paper snowflake, by folding a circle of paper and cutting small sections out and then unfolding it.
