Towne Centre Christmas Tree Lighting - 11/22/2008 at 6 pm - In front of Belk at Towne Centre Mount Pleasant Towne Centre is hosting the annual tree lighting ceremony for the kick-off to the holiday season on Saturday, November 22nd at 6pm. The ceremony will be located in front of the Belk Department store. This event is partnered with WEZL radio station, and the morning show talent Gary, will host the event. The American Red Cross will be having a Blood Drive from 4-6pm in conjunction with the Tree Lighting. Horse Drawn Carriage rides will start this weekend. There will be live holiday music played during the event. Open to All ages – Free to the public Christmases of Yesterday - 11/23/2008 – 01/02/2009 – The public is invited to experience Christmas in the Lowcountry at two of Charleston’s premier historic house museums. The Nathaniel Russell House, 51 Meeting St., and the Aiken-Rhett House, 48 Elizabeth St., will be dressed for the season from Nov. 23, 2007, through Jan. 2, 2008. Exhibits at the Nathaniel Russell House will portray Christmas in 1808, the year the Federal-era mansion was completed. Before Santa Claus and the Christmas tree became popular, Charlestonians celebrated the season by gathering with family and friends to feast on sweets and delicacies. Natural foliage will adorn the house and a grand dining table will be laden with treats as if awaiting the arrival of the Russell’s holiday guests. “Charlestonians were renowned for their lavish style of entertaining, and Christmas celebrations were the most lavish of all,” said Valerie Perry, Historic Charleston Foundation’s Associate Director of Museums. A Victorian Christmas in the South will captivate visitors to the Aiken-Rhett House. On the eve of the Civil War, the urban villa owned by Gov. and Mrs. William Aiken was the focus of the holiday social season in Charleston. Decorations will hearken back to the time of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol and the first use of “Christmas trees.” Christmas was also a special time for members of the enslaved African community. Exhibits in the outbuildings, where slaves both lived and worked, will emphasize their unique traditions. Charleston Sleigh Ride Aboard The Thriller – 12/01/2008 – 12/31/2008 Christmas in Charleston is a magical time and it has just gotten better. THRILLER Charleston announces its’ plans for a Charleston Sleigh Ride. Holiday Candlelight Tour at the Edmondston-Alston House – 12/05/2008 – 12/12/2008 – Celebrate the holiday season with a special candlelight tour of the Edmondston-Alston House, one of the first dwellings built on Charleston’s High Battery. The Christmas 1860 Candlelight Tours will be offered on Friday, December 5 and 12 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. and will feature costumed interpreters. The historic Edmondston-Alston House will be dressed for the holidays much as it would have been in the 1860s. Living historians in period clothing will tell the story of Charleston’s last opulent Christmas before the start of the Civil War, and will share the different Christmas traditions of the day. The South Carolina Corps of Cadets will present its Christmas Candlelight Service for the Lowcountry at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 6, 7 and 8 in Summerall Chapel on The Citadel campus. Cadets from the Protestant, Catholic and Gospel choirs, the Chorale, the Women’s Ensemble and members of The Citadel Regimental Band will take part in the annual celebration of the birth of Christ, observing the events of the Advent, the Annunciation, the Birth of the King, and Epiphany through Scripture lessons and carols. Traditional and international favorites are sung, and special highlights include the Procession of Lights. The hour-long program is free and open to the public. Donations are accepted. Flash cameras and video lights are not permitted inside the chapel. This event is one of the most popular Christmas activities in Charleston. Christmas Festival at Hampton Plantation –“Christmas through the Ages” – 12/13/2008 Hampton Plantation Hampton Plantation State Historic Site will celebrate the holidays on Saturday, Dec. 13, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. with a festival called “Christmas through the Ages.” Visitors will join the park staff in exploring the history of Christmas traditions in the Lowcountry. Highlights include tours of the 18th-century plantation mansion decorated for the holidays, dramatic readings of classic Christmas tales and hands-on activities such as creating Christmas cards. The cost is $4 for adults ages 16 – 64, $3 for children ages 6 – 15, $2.50 for any South Carolina senior citizen over the age of 65, and free for any one under the age of 6. Mount Pleasant Holiday Farmers Market and Craft Show - 12/13/2008 Mount Pleasant Holiday Farmers Market and Craft Show is a combination of locally grown fresh produce, baked goods, hot food and homemade preserves. Hand crafted gifts by more than 75 local artisans will include Christmas ornaments, glass work, lighthouses, whimsical holiday crafts, doll clothing, and original art by locally recognized potters, painters and photographers. Live entertainment with a holiday twist will flow through the market. Children activities will include face painting, a jump castle and a visit with Santa Claus. As always, admission and parking are free and we welcome all residents and visitors to this unique shopping opportunity.” Mount Pleasant Christmas Parade - 12/14/2008 - Along Coleman Boulevard More than 100 floats will march down Coleman Boulevard on Sunday, December 14, as the Mount Pleasant Holiday Parade set sails to the delight of thousands of residents and visitors. Immediately following the Fireworks and Tree Lighting Ceremony at 5:30 PM, the parade will begin at 5:45 PM at the intersection of Coleman and Pelzer Drive. It will continue past Shem Creek to conclude at the Sea Island Shopping Center around 7:15 PM.
Chanukah in the Square 2008 - 12/21/2008 - Marion Square Park The Yaschik/Arnold Jewish Studies Program at the College of Charleston and Chabad of Charleston in cooperation with the Office of Cultural Affairs of the City of Charleston will once again present a citywide celebration of the festival of lights on Sunday, December 21st from 4:00-6:00pm in Marion Square Park. Celebrating the first night of Chanukah, the festivities will include lighting of the first candle, live music, and a performance by the Jewish Choral Society. There will be jump castles, face painting, craft tables for children and adults where you can make your own dreidel, chanukiyah (menorah), and even donuts….plus more activities for everyone! Chanukah in the Square is free and open to the public. All are welcome.

Ann Caldwell is a full time vocalist, producer, and performing artist who has studied voice with June Bonner, former soprano with the Metropolitan Opera. The Magnolia Singers are an a capella vocal ensemble dedicated to the preservation and performance of early southern music and spirituals.
