Workshops
All of Beckah Krahula’s workshops will be held at A Small Cleverness on June 7, 8, and 9, 2005. The remaining convention workshops will be held at the Prime F. Osborne III Convention Center.
Soldering: The Basics of Jewelry Construction Beckah Krahula beckah@bearingbeads.com $95.00 – Class A Tuesday, June 7 – 10:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M. The emphasis in this class will be learning how to solder and learning good skills with soldering equipment. This workshop will also serve to review and refine skills. Students will learn how to adjust, care for, and maintain their own tools. The jewelry pieces will be kept simple. Transfers will be cut to size and foiled between glass. Workshop fee includes transparencies, solder, glass for two bracelets and two pendants. Bring: Students must bring their own 100 watt soldering iron (with rheostat or self regulating), bone folder, Xacto knife with new blade, cutting mat, scissors, and workbox. Short and Stout: A Whimsical Chubby Book Beckah Krahula beckah@bearing beads.com $105.00 – Class B Wednesday, June 8 – 10:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M. and Thursday, June 9 – 6:00 to 9:00 P.M. (Binding Class) A 4" x 4" wonder, this little book melds a variety of media to create a truly unique, metal embossed book. The morning portion of class will consist of creating background paper for the covers and collaging the pages. Collage techniques covered will help in the addition of movement and depth, combining matte and glossy papers, using mediums, surfaces, and elements. Emphasis will also be placed on design in a small space, creating flow and unity, highlights, shadow, and use of color. The afternoon session will be spent creating decorative elements with metal embossing for the cover and to adorn the pages. Techniques in metal embossing will cover how to use the tools, finish pieces, patina metal, and creating your own patterns. The workshop fee includes eight sheets of clip art, book covers, book cloth, metal for embossing, one sheet of brass/aluminum, one sheet tin coated pewter, pattern sheets, foam, Plexiglas, chain, and metal for creating findings. An evening class is included in the workshop fee. This time will be spent creating the spine, sewing the binding, and finishing the covers. The binding class will include students from Class C also. Bring: Metal embossing tools (available at A Small Cleverness), PVA glue, two 1" foam brushes, palette knife, colored pencils, Xacto knife with new blade, small cutting mat, detail scissors for paper, small scissors for metal use, two to three sheets of patterned paper for backgrounds, two sheets of tan or neutral cardstock, cardstock cut into six to eight 4" x 4" pieces, bone folder. Optional: 3" photocopies of pictures of yourself now or as a child to be used on signature page and workbox. Art Pairs: Bound and Chained A class in glass ATC’s and soldering with optional bindings. (Binding Class) At least three of six glass pages will be finished in the morning session. Techniques covered will include design elements, tips, and ideas for pages, transfers, adding mediums, glass glitter, metal leaf, stamping on glass, and painting options for glass. Soldering will be done in the afternoon session. Chain link binding will be demonstrated. The workshop fee includes six pieces of glass for pages, two covers, eight sheets of clip art, metal rings, and solder. An evening class is included in the workshop fee. This time will be spent learning a long stitch binding. The binding class will include students from Class B also. Bring: While not mandatory, students are strongly encouraged to bring their own 100 watt soldering iron (with rheostat or self regulating) to avoid having to take turns sharing instructor’s tools. Two in One: Shadowbox Workshop and Vintage Altered Accordion Book Patricia DiBona patricia@dibonadesigns.com Friday, June 10 – 3:30 to 7:30 P.M. $55.00 – Class 9 – Room 106 Join Patricia as she takes a 5" x 5" butterfly specimen box with glass cover to create a magnificent shadowbox in the first half of this workshop. You will begin by wrapping a padded background using Patricia’s collage papers and adding the smallest treasures and cherished pieces of velvet. Then, using one of Patricia’s beautiful outline stamps, you will then stamp on paper clay and paint the clay image. Finish the clay image with diamond glaze and embellish further with a variety of components such as feathers, buttons, antique findings, gold vinyl trim, and finish with metal plates. In the second half of the workshop, create your own heritage collage accordion book for photos, memorabilia, or to simply journal. Using Patricia’s specially designed accordion book kit which includes two pieces of pre-cut matt board, padding, folded accordion paper and ribbon, you will embellish a six page folded book. Embellish the cover with microscope glass slides, Patricia’s exclusive collage papers, paper cutouts, transparencies, charms, laser frames, and other components. Bring: scissors, double-stick tape, workbox, and any items you wish to use in the shadowbox. Artful Gathering Artful Journey Vendors Friday, June 10 – 7:30 to 9:30 P.M. $25.00 – Class 10 – Boardroom B This popular make and take fills quickly! Participants rotate through approximately eight vendors’ tables in this well organized event. Each person creates a project at every table from a prepared kit during this evening of fun. It is rusted metallic elements without the mess of the chemical process and it is a whole lot faster! Give Vintage/Shabby Chic a brand new twist by making your own rusted metallic elements. Then, explore a charming way to make faded wallpaper on colored cardstock. Several techniques will combine with fibers to make four shabby chic collage cards using cropping, colored pencils, embossing, spritzing, masking, wide double stick tape, and a brand new way to make rusted cut-outs and faded wallpaper. Uncovered Treasure Brenda Ambrosino bren@tampabay.rr.com Saturday, June 11 – 1:00 to 7:00 P.M. $80.00 – Class 13 – Room 105 Using several metallic surfaces and different patinas, students will create a box that looks like an old buried treasure was just uncovered! Opening the box will reveal a book filled with an eclectic collection of handmade papers, painted papers, found ephemera, old prints and photos, feathers, and other interesting elements. Use medium, glazes, paints, rub-ons, pearl-ex powders, encaustic wax, transferring techniques, and more to create this unique receptacle and the book inside. Fabulous fabric, fibers, and ribbons are used to enhance the enclosed book. Bring: workbox. They are loaded with color and texture through the use of fiber, beads, and rubberstamping. The background papers are a special surprise technique that can be used in all your rubberstamping and scrapbooking projects. Your quilted collage cards will be perfect for framing too! A must do class for the beginner and a great review for all. Learn Joyce’s latest tricks with basic tools. Joyce will also introduce you to their new unmounted Kompac™ case sets and how easy it is to use both unmounted and wood mounted stamps to do your projects. This class uses the largest variety of A Stamp in The Hand stamps giving you a splendid overview of their unique stamp line. (Highly recommended for students unfamiliar with Joyce Hazen’s techniques.) Bring: workbox.
Friendship Journal Roben-Marie Smith robenmarie@cfl.rr.com Sunday, June 12 – 10:00 A.M. to 3:00 P.M. $70.00 – Class 17 – Room 104 Remember, joy, cherish, and laughter is the theme of this Friendship Journal. It is 8" x 8" in size and features unique covers made of vintage rusted tin tiles. A hinge structure allows the book to open and lay flat. Several clever features such as chicken wire, everyday screws, hex nuts, and washers combine to fashion an eye-catching cover. A funky metal screen is painted, embellished, and attached to the inside cover. Four signatures of quality Bristol multi-media paper are sewn into the spine and secured to the book with the help of additional hex nuts which makes for an interesting combination. Each signature section features a painted tab with a Dymo word which peeks out from the outer edge of the book. The tabs read: REMEMBER, JOY, CHERISH, LAUGHTER. Painted corrugated paper is also attached to the first page of each signature under the tab for added interest and texture. The finished journal is the perfect place to hold cherished memories, mementos and thoughts about friendship. Assorted rubber stamps will be provided to enhance the journal pages or students may bring their favorites. Students are encouraged to bring personal images or mementos to add to their journal. Make flexible photo transfer tiles from a generous supply of colorful inkjet images which you will transfer to polymer clay. Create an assortment of stamped shapes to make ―faux cloisonné enamel‖ tiles with Pearl-Ex powders and liquid polymer clay. Play with Debbie’s extensive collection of one-of-a-kind molds and make a variety of small, dimensional forms. You can highlight these forms with Polished Pigments, Pearl-Ex powders, and/or Rub-n-Buff. This collection of treasures can be used for jewelry making, adorning your hand-made cards, boxes, picture frames, even altered books. If you want to be in a playful mood, this class is for you! That’s right! You build a base and then start tearing, scratching, and sanding it away to reveal a whole new look. Then add even more texture with rubber stamps and dye inks. Make several all occasion cards using reduction and multi-medium collage. Join us for this unique and interesting art form.
