NEW SLEEP MEDICINE PRACTICE OVERCOMING PATIENTS’ SLEEP PROBLEMS
USING LATEST DRUG-FREE TREATMENTS – INCLUDING NEUROFEEDBACK
Sleep HealthCare of Connecticut to Offer Free Insomnia Discussion Group
Monday Evening, March 14 for National Sleep Awareness Week
FAIRFIELD, CONN….March 2, 2011… A new sleep medicine practice, Sleep HealthCare of Connecticut, is providing
the latest treatments for insomnia, sleep apnea and other sleep disorders that can seriously harm overall health.
Sleep HealthCare of Connecticut was founded by three of the top health professionals in the field -- A. Joel
Papowitz, M.D., Medical Director; Edward B. O’Malley, PhD, Managing Director; and Derek Guice, RPsgT Technical
Director. The practice offers a comfortable, spa-like setting and the most advanced techniques -- including
neurofeedback – to promote natural, drug-free sleep. It departs from the traditional approach to treating sleep
disorders, recognizing that they are chronic – rather than acute – problems that require longer term management.

In recognition of National Sleep Awareness Week, on Monday, March 14 from 7—8:30 pm, Dr. O’Malley will lead an
Insomnia Discussion Group at Sleep HealthCare of Connecticut’s offices at 1305 Post Road, Fairfield, in the Brick
Walk Professional Building. There is no charge but seating is limited. To reserve a seat, call 203-292-9800 or send
email to firstname.lastname@example.org.
“Sleep disorders are serious, yet common and treatable chronic conditions affecting more than 70 million
Americans,” said Dr. Papowitz. “Until recently, the emphasis has been on diagnosis and acute treatment, rather
than the long term care that recent science demonstrates is more effective.”
Sleep HealthCare of Connecticut provides guidance in identifying and resolving these chronic sleep problems by
using advanced, proven treatments. For patients with insomnia, research has shown that their brain activity differs
from people who sleep well. Led by nationally recognized expert Dr. O’Malley, Sleep HealthCare is among the first
practices to offer neurofeedback for insomnia and other sleep disorders. This relaxing, computer-based technology
re-trains the brain to allow deep, natural, and restorative sleep. Sleep HealthCare of Connecticut is the only sleep
practice utilizing neurofeedback and other advanced behavioral methodologies to reduce the anxiety associated
with CPAP use reported by so many patients.
The most common sleep disorders treated at Sleep Healthcare of Connecticut are:
Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS)
Sleep Schedule Disorders
Nightmares and Dream Sleep-related Disorders
Sleep HealthCare is not a diagnostic sleep lab. However, the practice works with sleep labs, referring patients for
studies and helping sleep lab patients after diagnosis – in particular with the often-difficult process of adjusting to
CPAP therapy for sleep apnea. It also serves as a long-term maintenance and compliance partner with CPAP
equipment providers and as a resource to physicians in a number of medical specialties, as sleep disorders can
affect many areas of health.
For example, research has directly linked sleep apnea and insomnia -- the two most common sleep disorders -- to
diabetes, obesity, reflux and heart disease. Many of these at-risk patients do not adjust well to traditional
treatments, making new treatment approaches critical.
Dr. Papowitz is a board certified pulmonologist and internist, also board-certified in sleep medicine by both the
American Board of Sleep Medicine and the American Board of Internal Medicine. He founded and directed the sleep
center at Norwalk Hospital, and along with neuroscientist and sleep medicine expert Dr. O’Malley, created one of
the top centers in the northeast. Derek Guice, a certified sleep technician in CPAP and Neurofeedback therapy, has
worked with them since 2007.
