....checklist gear + equipment Item Stroller Stocking up for a new baby can be overwhelming. The StrollerTraffic Checklist makes things easier with an authoritative list of everything you need, from diapering and feeding essentials to layette and bath time must-haves. Recommended Brands Bugaboo, Silver Cross Dazzle, UPPAbaby G-Luxe, Graco SnugRider 7 A.M. enfant for winter; Bundleme Lite for spring. Graco SnugRide Britax Roundabout Fisher Price Rainforest, Papasan Cradle Oeuf, Fisher Price Rainforest Graco Lillebaby Everywear, Ergo Baby, Market Sling Baby In Sight Tiny Love – Gymini Musical Kick & Discover Evenflo SmartSteps Tips Use the SnugRider until baby is ready for the Dazzle or G-Luxe (around 9 months). Bugaboo footmuff does not fit many umbrella strollers. Get the SnugRide insert headrest. The Nomie Baby cover is a lifesaver. Running the Papasan’s mobile, music and toy tray all at once can totally over stimulate baby. Feed babies with acid reflux in the bouncy. Practice assembly when naptime isn’t imminent. Don’t throw out the Ergo how-to DVD. You’ll need it. Adhesive tape loses its stickiness after a while, so keep some extra two-sided tape in the car. Gymini play mat toys double as stroller toys. Invest in a few Switcharoos when attention span dims. Leaving the hospital is stressful, you won’t want to be bothered with a difficult costume change. Essential until the umbilical cord falls off. Super-thin cotton ones are best for layering. The ones that button-up the front are easiest. Get some with feet and some without. Essential for the crawling stage. Great item for monogramming! Lots of newborn outfits come with caps. Most other brands don’t stay on very well. Totally unnecessary, but fun. If you want cashmere, make sure it’s machinewashable. Your baby will spit up on the blanket every time. The ones that snap-up the front are easier to manage than the ones that slip over the baby’s head. Cotton for summer, fleece for winter. Designer versions are cute, but you will be the only one to ever see them. Use infant stain remover on YOUR clothes, too. Great for shoulder spit-ups. Getting baby used to tepid (rather than warm) bottles will make the transition to cold milk easier. You can also boil water on the stove. Some moms skip the sterilizer altogether and just use the bags. Loose straws from sippy cups can fall out of the basket and wreck your dishwasher. Comes with a great bottle brush. You’ll need more than you think (20, maybe?). Waterproof and Velcro are the way to go. It’s not a bad idea to have a manual pump in case of electricity outages. Other brands are too thick and show through clothes. Use them proactively. Stains like crazy. Get an extra cover for accidents. Even open-minded friends appreciate the discretion. Freeze extra baby food in a Tupperware ice cube tray with cover. Get baby used to drinking both water and milk from the sippy as soon as you introduce it. The color gets kind of funky after a gazillion dishwasher runs. The stroller is a great transitional place to feed baby (before the high chair). Order in bulk from diapers.com. Skip the wipes warmer; not necessary and your baby will wince at chilly wipes on the go. You can also just keep wipes in a Ziploc bag. It’s only fair to use these when tossing diapers in public. Reuse if not “soiled.” Always lock it shut, as there is a sharp razor mechanism inside for cutting the bags. Many diaper bags come with a changing pad. Get a tub for the changing table, and a tube for the diaper bag. Warning: Triple Paste stains clothes. Your baby will spend a lot of naked time on the changing table, so it’s one place where organic cotton makes sense. Might stain your washcloths. Plastic comb teeth break easily (choking hazard). Fluffy terry washcloths are too thick for tiny baby parts. You’ll get tons of these as gifts. Squirter toys collect water and grow mold. Toy nets get slimy. www.strollertraffic.com Page 5 of 6 ... sleeping Item Pacifier Sheet saver Crib sheets Swaddling blankets Mattress Pad cover Bassinet Snuggle Nest, if not using a bassinet Audio monitor Night light Video monitor Recommended Brands Mam, Nuk TL Care Super Natural Baby SwaddleMe TL Care Ninna Nanna Supreme Graco Digital Oxo Candela Summer Infant Tips Buy one of several brands until you know which one baby likes. Doubles as a liner for the Bugaboo bassinet. Get two sets. When it comes time to “break the swaddle,” try one arm at a time. Waterproof is a must. The Bugaboo bassinet can double as a real bassinet. When baby starts squirming out, it’s time to retire the Snuggle Nest. Light sleepers may find even the lowest volume setting too disruptive. Portable night lights are great for middle-ofthe-night feedings. If you think you’ll obsess and watch baby all night, don’t use the video monitor until baby starts rolling over. Not as comfy-cozy as traditional bumpers, but eliminates the suffocation fears. Mesh bumper Breathable Baby www.strollertraffic.com Page 6 of 6 ...
