LIBRARY ASSISTANT (Contract from 28 January 2013 to the end of June 2014)
The school is seeking to appoint a Library Assistant to work with the Librarian to ensure the smooth and efficient
running of its busy school library. The position requires someone who enjoys working as a part of a team to achieve
the library’s objectives. The post holder must therefore enjoy working with students, have a passion for books and
literature and be computer literate. The person appointed must have an excellent command of written and spoken
English, as well as clerical and inter-personal skills of a high order. Proficient computer skills, and a willingness to
develop these further, are essential. The successful applicant will need to become proficient in operating library
system software including Softlink, “Oliver”.

The position is a full-time but term time only position. The successful candidate will have unpaid leave each year
during summer holidays which are specified in the ESF annual school calendar.

Role Name Library Assistant
Role Summary The Library Assistant provides the library supporting whenever needed to ensure
the smooth running of the library. The post holder is responsible for supporting the
curriculum, teaching and learning within the school.
Main Accountabilities Main duties:
a) Maintain the efficient running of the Library.
b) Assist the Librarian in overseeing the use of all Library equipment.
c) Undertake routine Library procedures
d) Ensure, as far as practicable, the security of the Library and its contents.
e) Encourage students and staff to use the library regularly.
f) Establish a professional and friendly working relationship with students.
g) Assist with storage, shelving and maintenance of resources.
h) Support teaching staff as required.
i) Assist with Departmental administrative tasks including filing and
j) Assist with members of the school community to access print/audio visual
and electronic services, materials and facilities
k) Offer guidance to users, where necessary, on the proper use of the
INTERNET, CD-ROM, and any other technology-related equipment.
l) Willing to learn and keep up to date with Library automation.

n) On the occasions when the Librarian needs to be absent from the
premises, ensuring the smooth running of the Library for daily users.
o) Supervise the library during breaks, lunchtime and after school.
p) Participate in developing interesting and relevant displays.
q) Assist staff and students to easily access information and recreational

s) Provide clerical support as required.
t) Carry out all reasonable tasks that may be requested by the Librarian, Vice
Principal (in charge of the Library) and the Business and Administration
Any other duties as reasonably assigned by the Business and Administration
Manager in line with policy and practice for rotation of duties among staff for
breadth of knowledge and experience as means in attaining good team work and
objectives for training and development.
Typical reporting relationship The post holder is accountable, in the first instance, to the Librarian and report to
the Business and Administration Manager for HR issues.
Minimum typical education Diploma/Bachelor Degree in Library Studies/Other Relevant Subjects
Minimum typical experience 3-5 years relevant experience
