Running head: WEBSITE ANAYLSIS 1

WEBSITE ANAYLSIS 2
Team D has concluded that a website needs to have the following attributes to be
successful: visual appeal, simplicity, intuitive navigation, working links, uniform design, and
current updated code. In analyzing the Smith Systems Consulting website these factors were
kept in mind as a design guide, while also incorporating factors from the Web Design Best
Practices Checklist by Terry Ann Morris, Ed. D.
The analysis resulted in the following observations. The Smith Systems Consulting
website was visually appealing employing simplicity in its design layout, adequate white space,
good visual contrast, clean pages, good use of headings and bullets. In several areas bold text
was used to draw attention. Throughout the site the design was consistent. Two design flaw were
observed, the text is too small making it difficult to read, and the site was written in older html.
In regard to the sites functionality it loaded quickly and offered working links.
Although the Smith Systems Consulting website design is harmonious and appealing, it
lacks consistent linking from page to page. Navigation links are not clearly labeled and do not
distinguish between normal page headings and links to other services. Further review resulted in
the following observation. The site lacked contact information, site search capabilities, a site
map, accessibility features, and a page footer. Also lacking are the firms qualifications that
should be available under a separate heading in the site.
In preparation for the analysis of the Smith Systems Consulting site a comparison was
made to another similar site. Odyssey Systems was analyzed with the same guide compiled by
Team D. Odyssey's design layout is close in format to Smith's. Odyssey follows a consistent,
clean, simple, visually appealing format. The site loads quickly and also offers working links.
WEBSITE ANAYLSIS 3
Unlike Smith, Odyssey has labeled navigation links, displays contact information and the
company's qualifications. The Odyssey site similar to the Smith site lacks a site map,
accessibility features, site search capabilities, and a page footer. A final observation confirmed
that the Odyssey site was also created using older html code.
The objective is to have an effective design that is in line with other competitor sites,
offering current and potential clients an intuitive concise website. This involves making some
changes in the following areas: navigation, background information, content presentation,
functionality, and page layout.
1. Navigation - label links and correct broken links - add site map.
2. Background Information - add company's credentials, history and contact information.
3. Content Presentation - correct font size and color.
4. Functionality - create working links consistently throughout the site.
5. Page Layout - add a page footer.
A screenshot of the Odyssey Systems site below depicts the type of content presentation and
background information changes that are needed on the Smith System's site.

Observe the Smith System's site below in comparison with regards to font type and size.
Note that although color contrast and color scheme is in keeping with best practices for
designing a website, the font is small making it difficult and uncomfortable to read. And while
there are headings for Contact and About Us, neither work.
It is important to note that both sites lack a page footer. In further reviewing similar sites
it was observed that none of the sites had page footers. Nonetheless it is recommended that a
page footer with a site map be created for the Smith System's Consulting site in order to comply
with consumer expectations of security and site integrity.
Team D proposes to address all the areas that have been denoted as flaws in the Smith
System's site design. A prototype will be submitted for analysis.

Effects of Recommendations
Proposed recommendations would greatly benefit the clients overall interaction with the
Smith website. Visually improvements will allow for better interface. Rectifying the navigational
and broken link issues as well as adding a page footer, and site map, will improve the clients
ability to quickly and efficiently move throughout the site. Lastly, recommendations to display
the company's credentials and to offer a Contact Us form is a necessary measure needed for
expanding and maintaining a client base.
