The Flying M Newsletter | Miller Design Co. | Fall 2008 Flying An Evening of Jazz On Friday, September 19, 2008, Robert W. Miller, ASID, and Jacob Scherer hosted “An Evening of Jazz” in partnership with Gentry Magazine. After being back in Woodside, the two wanted to do something for the community—to have a party with a purpose. “We chose the Horse Park at Woodside,” says Bob Miller. “They are an important part of Woodside’s heritage and in need of financial support.” Jacob Scherer concurs. “The Horse Park at Woodside is an incredible organization that provides so many equestrian opportunities for kids and adults. We appreciate their stewardship of the land thus protecting it from being over developed. We love their outreach including B.O.K. ranch, a therapeutic horseback riding program for children and adults with special needs.” Bob Miller & Jacob Scherer welcomed friends, clients and community for an “Evening of Jazz” to raise money for The Horse Park at Woodside. The Woodside community fully supported the event. Gentry Magazine brought Grace Street Catering and the Martin Ranch Winery for a superb evening of “tastings.” Woodside Bakery & Café provided trays of their popular desserts in one-bite sizes so even the calorie conscious could indulge. The party was held under a tent sponsored by MDC neighbors, Alain Pinel, and Judy Sieber of Emily Joubert set up a luxury equestrian display along with fresh flower arrangements. McKinlaigh’s owner Thom Shulz accepted the award on his behalf. Miles has been riding and competing for many years at the Horse Park at Woodside and is still very involved spending time with the park’s Pony Club kids. “She’s living the dream of every budding equestrian,” says Gayle Strickland, board member. “We’re proud to have had the opportunity to honor her at this event.” Gina Miles and her Silver Medal with Gerome Shaw. For these MDC clients, their design muse was a hotel lobby in Hawaii. “They wanted a tropical feel,” says Bob Miller. “We made sure that we fulfilled their wishes but that we interpreted tropical in a fresh, new way.” First, Bob and Jacob divided the bowling alley living room into distinct conversation areas, just like a hotel lobby—one oriented towards the fireplace and the other facing the television. Putting two sofas back-to-back is unexpected and a great way to divide the space. Deep, comfortable chairs were upholstered in a sunny yellow fabric with a modern palm leaf pattern. They swivel so they can face the conversation or turn to watch the flat screen. The designers accessorized using coffee table books on hotels from around the world and interesting artifacts that pay homage to the homeowners’ love of travel. The dining room features a large espresso colored table surrounded by upholstered chairs. The wave pattern subtly mimics the effects of tropical breezes and the ocean waves. Because the homeowners are always on the go, the two designers found faux So where does your design inspiration come from? Interpreting it into beautiful interiors is what the design team at Miller Design Co. does best. Woodside Sconce Jacob Scherer and Bob Miller designed a custom equestrian sconce for the Woodside Bakery & Café. They were inspired by the town’s heritage with horses and wanted to use a familiar material in a unique way. Thus, the Woodside Sconce was created and is available through special order. It comes in a variety of finishes including satin nickel, chrome, sanded seal and blue, black, gold or auburn colored patina. Call 650.529.2700 for pricing and to place an order. Bob Says… In these times of economic uncertainty, people ask how they should proceed with their plans to renovate or redecorate their homes. It’s important that you spend your money wisely and work with a design firm that can help you prioritize. If you don’t feel comfortable embarking on the entire home, focus on one room at a time. You’ll make a significant impact visually and emotionally. Choose your master bedroom so you can finally have that retreat you’ve been longing for, a family room where you most often spend time or a dining room where you can break bread together. Save kitchen or bathroom remodels for later as they tend to require a more generous budget allocation. The Flying M newsletter is published quarterly by the Miller Design Co.
