       ROD BLAGOJEVICH

1 ROD BLAGOJEVICH What uh, what are you thinking about the Senate
2 Seat? Do you have any thoughts?
 3 ROBERT BLAGJEVICH About what?
 4 ROD BLAGOJEVICH U.S. Senate.
5 ROBERT BLAGOJEVICH No I, I got no thoughts on it. None. I mean I don’t
6 have, I got no insights. I think I honestly, (laughs)
 7 I have no insights.
 8 ROD BLAGOJEVICH What?
9 ROBERT BLAGOJEVICH Well, I have no insights to give you that you don’t
10 already have. None. But I mean the only, the only
11 caution, and you know, brotherly advice I’d give
12 you is make sure it’s a tit for tat, man. You get
13 something. I wouldn’t give anything away.
14 ROD BLAGJEVICH Rahm Emanuel is looking for me. I told you what
15 he said, right?
16 ROBERT BLAGJEVICH Yeah, yeah. I said, uh, I mean, about uh Jarrett
17 being out and him wanting her out of the White
18 House?
19 ROD BLAGOJEVICH Yeah.
20 ROBERT BLAGJEVICH Yeah.
21 ROD BLAGJEVICH And the four candidates that would be acceptable.
22 ROBERT BLAGOJEVICH Oh, uh, yeah, I think you, Hynes is one of ‘em?
23 ROD BLAGOJEVICH Yeah.
24 ROBERT BLAGOJEVICH Yeah.
25 ROD BLAGOJEVICH I think that’s designed to elevate Duckworth.

1
 1 ROBERT BLAGJEVICH No shit.
 2 ROD BLAGJEVICH Mm-hmm.
 3 ROBERT BLAGJEVICH Interesting.
4 ROD BLAGJEVICH Yeah, she’s got little or no chance. You know that?
5 I mean don’t, you don’t say any of this to Jessica.
6 ROBERT BLAGJEVICH Oh, no fucking way. Don’t even worry about that.
 7 ROD BALGJEVICH Yeah.
8 ROBERT BLAGJEVICH No. What do you mean she has no fucking
9 chance? What are you talking about?
10 ROD BLAGJEVICH Uh, Duckworth.
11 ROBERT BLAGJEVICH She has no chance for what?
12 ROD BLAGJEVICH For me to make her senator.
13 ROBERT BLAGJEVICH Oh, yeah, I know that.
14 ROD BALGJEVICH You know, unless they, you know, they, they make
15 me a great deal. You know what I mean?
16 ROBERT BLAGJEVICH Yeah. Well I, I believe, all along have believed,
17 that if Obama got elected, she was gonna go be his
18 Veteran’s Affair person. That’s the perfect job for
19 her. At the national level. That’s where she’s the
20 highest and best use to the world. Right there.
21 ROD BLAGOJEVICH Mm-hmm.
22 ROBERT BLAGOJEVICH You talk about a perfect fit, that’s the fit.
23 ROD BLAGOJEVICH Mm-hmm.
24 ROBERT BLAGOJEVICH Unless there’s obviously something in it (laughs)
25 for you in some other, you know, some other
26 capacity. But she’s the right one for that job. What
27 she’s doing for you at the national level.
28 (PAUSE)
29 So, so, you’re time frame is gonna be end of the
30 year, first of next year?
31 ROD BLAGOJEVICH Well I have, you know, maybe it’s before that, but

2
1 you know, they got to put this big push on before
2 Durbin’s gonna call me.
3 ROBERT BLAGJEVICH Yeah, your good, your good buddy, Dick Durbin?
4 ROD BLAGOJEVICH Yeah.
5 ROBERT BLAGOJEVICH Fuck him.
6 ROD BLAGOJEVICH Yeah.
7 ROBERT BLAGOJEVICH (Inaudible)
8 ROD BLAGOJEVICH Why do you say that?
9 ROBERT BLAGJEVICH Did you send condolences, anything like that to
10 his…
11 ROD BLAGOJEVICH Yeah, yeah, I called his chief-of-staff. Uh,
12 ROBERT BLAGOJEVICH Good.
13 ROD BLAGOJEIVCH (Inaudible)
14 ROBERT BLAGOJEVICH Ah, you’re breaking up. He’s a ….
15 ROD BLAGJEVICH Yeah, yeah, his daughter, I took care of it.
16 ROBERT BLAGOJEVICH Huh?
17 ROD BLAGOJEVICH I took care of it.
18 ROBERT BLAGOJEVICH Yeah, good. So, what are you gonna tell him?
19 Boy you, I think you already explained it tonight. I
20 mean…
21 ROD BLAGJEVICH I’m curious to see if they’re gonna try to like get
22 into (Inaudible) Madigan that Lisa doesn’t want it.
23 You know what I’m saying?
24 ROBERT BLAGOJEVICH Yeah.
25 ROD BLAGOJEVICH That’ll be one of the things I think Rahm would try
26 to do. Try to take that option away.
27 ROBERT BLAGOJEVICH The Madigan option?
28 ROD BLAGOJEVICH Yeah. But if you’re, but, Madigan, if that, if they
29 are at all interested in it, they, they’re not giving
30 that up.
31 ROBERT BLAGOJEVICH Right.

3
1 ROD BLAGOJEVICH No amount of discussion from any of those people
2 impresses him. He….It’s credit, that’s where. You
3 know, to his credit and his detriment.
4 ROBERT BLAGOJEVICH But has anyone on her behalf come forward to you?
 5 ROD BLAGOJEVICH No.
6 ROBERT BLAGOJEVICH Ok. So, how would you know that she really wants
7 it? I mean, does anyone know?
8 ROD BLAGOJEVICH She hasn’t turned it down. She hasn’t rejected it.
9 She’s been publicly interviewed on it. Her name is
10 out there, ok?
11 ROBERT BLAGOJEVICH Ok. Well, obviously we got people who are
12 lobbying for the job.
13 ROD BLAGOJEVICH Well, there are varying ways of doing it. She’s also
14 calling my supporters saying she’s running for
15 governor. She’s announcing in a few weeks. That
16 kind of thing. So, they’re all saying she wants it.
17 ROBERT BLAGOJEVICH Yeah.
18 ROD BLAGOJEVICH You know what I’m saying?
19 ROBERT BLAGJEVICH Yeah, yeah.
20 ROD BLAGOJEVICH No, I think she, and then you, you analyze their
21 politics, it’s, they want it, in my mind.
22 ROBERT BLAGOJEVICH Yeah, well you know, you made a very good
23 argument there that these are the kind of people
24 who maneuver through the path of least resistance.
25 And uh, you’re a guy, uh, who has not maneuvered
26 that way, who’s worked against the current and
27 unless you have some fucking uh, slam-dunk
28 guarantee that you’re gonna get what you want,
29 man, I wouldn’t deal with the devil like that.
30 ROD BLAGOJEVICH Yeah, I know that.
31 ROBERT BLAGOJEVICH And give them what they want.

4
1 ROD BALGOJEVICH I know that. Don’t give, you’re telling me the
2 obvious. You…..
3 ROBERT BLAGJEVICH I’ve got to say it.
4 ROD BLAGOJEVICH Yeah, come on. It’s got to get passed beforehand.
5 That’s a big if.
6 ROBERT BLAGOJEVICH Yeah.
7 ROB BLAGJEVICH Or something in you know, if there’s another way,
8 someone can suggest it to me, but it’s got to be
9 passed beforehand.
10 ROBERT BLAGOJEVICH Well I think it would be kind of ironic that if you
11 put Gery Chico in there, the guy who ran against
12 Obama and lost, who is probably the most uniquely
13 qualified for that job, that would be doing the State
14 of Illinois a real service.
15 ROD BLAGOJEVICH Yeah.
16 ROBERT BLAGJEVICH You know that….if you want an opinion, that would
17 be my opinion.
18 ROD BLAGOJEVICH Yeah, he’s great.
19 ROBERT BLAGOJEVICH He’s fucking, he is true-blue quality. And he’s got
20 accomplishments.
21 ROD BLAGOJEVICH He’s not black though.
22 ROBERT BLAGOJEVICH Well that’s horse-shit, you know?
23 ROD BLAGOJEVICH Yeah, I’m just telling you.
24 ROBERT BLAGOJEVICH Neither are you.
25 ROD BLAGOJEVICH Yeah, but I’m talking about my politics, you
26 understand?
27 ROBERT BLAGOJEVICH No, I understand that, and I, and I yield to that, of
28 course. I yield to that. (Pause) You know, and you
29 made a very good point. Jesse Jr is not emotionally
30 stable to do anything other than, hell, cry. I mean
31 he shouldn’t even be a goddamn congressman.

5
1 He’s a fucking articulate incompetent.
                          ***********
2 ROD BLAGJEVICH We did good tonight.
3 ROBERT BLAGJEVICH Yeah, it was good.
4 ROD BLAGOJEVICH Keep driving it.
5 ROBERT BLAGOJEVICH Need more.
6 ROD BLAGOJEVICH They’re going to….Call Lon, call Lon and Wy-,
7 Lon tomorrow, and say what do I do about this
8 Magoon, he’s not calling me back. You, and ask
9 him, is it possible Wyma told him not to do
10 anything? Maybe you shouldn’t say that. But just
11 say, how do we get Wyma to call him. What do we
12 do with this guy, Magoon.
13 ROBERT BLAGOJEVICH Well, actually, Wyma, I called Wyma on Monday.
14 He called me back. I, I didn’t get his message. I’ll
15 ask Wyma tomorrow, if he takes my call.
16 ROD BLAGJEVICH Yeah, good. And don’t at all tip to Wyma off on
17 any of these discussions on the senate seat.
18 ROBERT BLAGOJEVICH Do not worry about that.
19 ROD BLAGOJEVICH Yeah.
20 ROBERT BLAGOJEVICH I don’t talk to anybody about that.
21 ROD BLAGOJEVICH Yeah, that’s good. Look, Gery’s great. I mean you
22 know he’s clearly, but right now, between you and
23 me, the frontrunner’s Louanner Peters. And do not
24 repeat this.
25 ROBERT BLAGOJEVICH Oh, I won’t, no, (Inaudible)
26 ROD BLAAGOJEVICH She’s a good person. She’s loyal. She’s an
27 African American woman. She lives in Springfield,
28 so you can say she’s a down-stater.
29 ROBERT BLAGOJEVICH Yeah.
30 ROD BLAGOJEVICH She uh, she was a community activist. Ok? Um, I

6
1 feel like her, she’s very loyal to me.
2 ROBERT BLAGOJEVICH Yeah, no question about that.
3 ROD BLAGOJEVICH I believe, you know, she’d even commit to me that
4 she’d run again. Um, she’s a great person. Her
5 downside is she was Gus Savage’s chief-of-staff,
6 but, then again, Obama went to Reverend Wright’s
7 church, you know what I mean?
8 ROBERT BLAGOJEVICH Yep. Well, I had a chance to visit with her a few
9 weeks ago when we were having an alumni event
10 coordination meeting on a Saturday and I said,
11 well, what are you going to do when your
12 government stint’s all over? Cause she, as you
13 know, lives in Springfield, and likes being in the
14 country.
15 ROD BLAGOJEVICH Her brother’s like a military, career military guy
16 down in Louisiana. Great family. Louanners.
17 Keep going.
18 ROBERT BLAGOJEVICH Yeah, who’s retired. And she’s going to be moving
19 back to the family farm
20 ROD BLAGOJEVICH Right.
21 ROBERT BLAGOJEVICH …where all siblings are either there now
22 assembling to live or will over time.
23 ROD BLAGOJEVICH Right.
24 ROBERT BLAGOJEVICH Really just marveled at that. And, and I left that,
25 the discussion, just as you, that this is a quality
26 person who, you know what, didn’t depend on
27 anyone to help her. She took care of herself, and
28 what a crowning, damn achievement if you were to
29 appoint her to that. I mean I think it would, you
30 know, fireworks ought to go off. What an
31 American story.

7
1 ROD BLAGOJEVICH Yeah, and then I’d want her to run again, though.
 2 ROBERT BLAGOJEVICH Well, whatever.
3 ROD BLAGOJEVICH I mean here’s a real wild idea, if she can run again
 4 and hold it…
 5 ROBRET BLAGOJEVICH Yeah.
6 ROD BLAGOJEVICH Ok? That is, as I’m leaving as governor, she just
7 fucking resigns, and I appoint me to six years.
 8 (laughs) Imagine that.
 9 ROBERT BLAGOJEVICH Can she uh, that’s a wild…
10 ROD BLAGOJEVICH Can you fucking imagine? Do not repeat this to
11 anybody.
12 ROBERT BLAGOJEVICH Of course, of course not.
13 ROD BLAGOJEVICH Ok.
14 ROBERT BLAGOJEVICH That is, is she capable of running a campaign? I
15 don’t know if that’s in her.
16 ROD BLAGOJEVICH Yeah, she’s been helpful, she’s been active with us.
17 Oh, definitely.
18 ROBERT BLAGOJEVICH Is she a speech maker?
19 ROD BLAGOJEVICH She’s a, yeah, hey, she’s also a breast cancer
20 survivor.
21 ROBERT BLAGOJEVICH No kidding. Didn’t know that. Didn’t know that.
22 Well, she seemed very, she’s clearly quality. I
23 totally agree with you. You could, you couldn’t do
24 better other than Gery Chico. She’d be a great pick.
25 ROD BLAGOJEVICH I believe she’d um, you know, Emil Jones is a
26 strong candidate. Harris likes Emil over Louanner.
27 I don’t know what his reservation is about
28 Louanner.
29 ROBERT BLAGOJEVICH I don’t know.
30 ROD BLAGOJEVICH But uh, it’s almost like, he feels like you know he’s
31 her boss, and maybe she’s passing him by. I don’t

1 know. But I mean Emil’s going to say he’s not
2 running again. So, that means it’s an open seat, and
3 all these other assholes can run for it.
4 ROBERT BLAGOJEVICH Yeah.
5 ROD BLAGOJEVICH I’d rather have it so
6 they have to challenge her, Louanner. I mean part
7 of the deal with Louanner is she’s going to have to
8 run again, or at least say it.
9 ROBERT BLAGOJEVICH And what if she says, no. I don’t want to do that.
10 Which is very possible.
11 ROD BLAGOJEVICH Well, that’ll be, that’ll be part of the consideration.
12 ROBERT BLAGJEVICH Yeah. Yeah.
13 ROD BLAGOEJEVICH Yeah. If she’s not going to run again, then, she can
14 maybe not announce it. You know? Just act like
15 she is, and then doesn’t do it. I don’t know. I got to
16 think about it.
17 ROBERT BLAGOJEVICH Yeah. Alright. Um, shit. There was one other
18 thing, here’s…
19 ROD BLAGOJEVICH See, I think if she says she runs again, she
20 can raise some money. Who’s going to challenge
21 her? She’s the only African American woman in
22 the U.S. Senate. The only African American in the
23 U.S. Senate. Who’s going to challenge her on the
24 democratic side? Jesse Jr?
25 ROBERT BLAGOJEVICH Yeah.
26 ROD BLAGOJEVICH Ok, well, the white candidates will be afraid to run
27 against her. You run against the only African
28 American U.S. Senator.
29 ROBERT BLAGOJEVICH Yep. Yeah, I did not. I don’t have that perspective.
30 ROD BLAGOJEVICH That’s why she makes more sense than Gery Chico.
31 Because if I put Gery, that’s the rap on me is, you

1 know.
2 ROBERT BLAGOJEVICH Well, Carol Moseley Braun, she just pissed it away,
3 I presume.
4 ROD BLAGOJEVICH Yeah, but Carol Moseley Braun, no one dared
5 challenge her in the primary.
6 ROBERT BLAGOJEVICH Ok.
7 ROD BLAGOJEVICH You see what I’m saying?
8 ROBERT BLAGOJECICH Yeah. Well, hey, you got, you know, this is an
9 interesting time for you.
10 ROD BLAGOJEVICH Ok, well, listen, what?
11 ROBERT BLAGOJEVICH No, I said alright.
12 ROD BLAGOJEVICH Ok, I’ll call you in the morning.
13 ROBERT BLAGOJEVICH Alright, bye.
14 ROD BLAGOJEVICH Alright, bye.
