									Example of Obtaining the Heavy Vehicle Percentage and Estimating Heavy Vehicle
Volumes

Note: Information in each step is obtained from either the example on page 44 of the 2011 Traffic Data Report or
the attached Heavy Vehicle Percentages table.


Step A – List information from the Traffic Count Hourly Report.

Step B – Determine the NYSDOT Region where the station is located.

The NYSDOT Region can be determined from the Count Station. The Count Station is a six digit number consisting
of a two digit Regional/County code followed by a four digit Station ID. In the example, Station 920023 has a
Region/County code of 92 and a Station ID of 0023. Regions 1 through 9 have Count Stations where the first
number is the NYSDOT Region. Regions 10 and 11 have Count Stations that start with zeros. Region 10 will have
Region/County codes 03 and 07. All other Region/County codes starting with zero are in Region 11 (see Appendix
D of the 2011 Traffic Data Report).

Step C – Obtain the Heavy Vehicle % from the attached 2011 Heavy Vehicle Percentages table using the Region
and Functional Class.

Step D – Calculate the estimated volume of Heavy Vehicles at the Station. Multiply the Heavy Vehicle percentage
by the AADT.


Estimated Heavy Vehicle Volume = AADT × (Heavy Vehicle % ÷ 100)

                                  = 2746 × (13.7 ÷ 100)

                                  = 376


Heavy Vehicles are defined as all vehicles Class 4 through 13 of the FHWA Vehicle Classifications (page 35 of the
2011 Traffic Data Report). Heavy Vehicle Percentages have been calculated using classification counts completed
over the last six collection seasons (2006 – 2011). The number of counts used in the calculation of each Heavy
Vehicle Percentage is listed in parenthesis.
