Lesson 1 – Projects 1 & 2
Students are to read the “Project 1, Introduction to HTML” and become familiar with the terminology relating to the Internet, World Wide Web and Web pages. In Project 2, students will create a basic Web page using Notepad.
Lesson 1 Outcomes (Objectives):
The student will: Project 1 & 2 Describe the Internet, the World Wide Web and the W3C. Identify Web site layouts and types. Discuss Web browsers. Define HTML and Web editors. Discuss the Web development life cycle. Use Notepad to create a Web page. Change background color, center headings and use a definition list. Save and print worksheets.

Project 1 mentions the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). Visit their Web site and review “About W3C”. Using a word processor, write a short one to two page paper answering: 2.1 2.2 2.3 What is the mission of the W3C? Who was the inventor, director of the World Wide Web? The W3C is hosted by three organizations on three continents, what is the name of the host on the North American (USA) continent?

Review the “Organization” of the W3C. Copy and paste the pie chart that identifies the contribution of the USA to the support of the W3C. What is the percentage of contribution form the USA?
Web page accessibility 3.1 Continue your paper that you have created in instruction two above, W3C. Briefly summarize (couple of paragraphs) the Baltimore Sun article regarding Target stores, written on August 28, 2008, by Andrea Walker. Review the blog, “access ability blog” serving higher education. Note the 25 free Web site checkers. Continue to the “Total Validator” Web site. Review the introduction and briefly describe the purpose of the site. 3.2 Run a test on a Web site with which you are familiar. Copy only the Summary portion of the results, as it would be too much to print everything. I used www.umary.edu.

For each Web page you should have two prints, the first is the finished Web page as it appears in Internet Explorer and the second is the code as it appears in Notepad.

Visit the Web site for your textbook at: www.scsite.com , proceed through the (hierarchical) site to our textbook’s Web page. Note the “Data Files for Students” and the “Student Online Companion” hyperlinks.
Select the “Student Online Companion” hyperlink. Add the page to your “Favorites, as you will return to these pages frequently. For Projects 1 & 2, scan the “More Abouts” and the “Learn It Online” features. In the Project 1 Learn It Online section, select the Flashcards and run through them until you are comfortable with the jargon. Then click the Practice Test for Project 1, complete the test and print the results. You will repeat this process for each project that we complete in our textbook. Hand the printouts in with your Project 1 & 2 assignments. Check out the other options available on the Learn It Online Web page (Tips and Tricks?).
