Woodlea Road
Dear Parents/Carers,

I hope you have all had a lovely Christmas holiday and I would like to wish you all healthy, happy and prosperous New

School Closure
Thank you all for your understanding and the prompt action taken in ensuring your children were collected from
school on Tuesday. There will be times when school has to close in the interest of health and safety or for other
unavoidable reasons. Please be aware that the safety of all is taken very seriously and I am sure you are aware of the
recent treacherous conditions. It seems that soft powdery snow is less of an issue than ice and nationally grit is in
short supply! School was and will only be closed if it is totally unavoidable to remain open, usually in the
interest of health and safety.

You can find information about any closures at:-

BBC Radio Lancashire http://news.bbc.co.uk/local/lancashire/hi 95.5 FM, 103.9 FM

Please note, as there were so many closures this week and the radio stations struggled to keep up with the volume
of requests, the most reliable daily updates can be found on Lancashire County Council and Woodlea websites.

In the event of a closure we recommend children keep up with their learning by reading daily, ensuring fluency of
times tables and division tables, addition, multiplication, subtraction and division calculations, practising spellings and

Some ideas for writing are:-

Open Friday Assemblies
We would like to invite to a trial ‘open to all’ Friday assembly. You are welcome to join us on a Friday morning in our
celebratory whole school assembly which starts at 9.00 am. On the dates when there is a class assembly priority is
given to parents with a child in that class. Please do join us if you can.

Lancashire Parent Partnership Award (LPPA)
Woodlea Junior School is working towards achieving LPPA. We hope that our work with parent ‘drop ins’, parent
workshops, learning mentor support work, links with Lancashire College, parent task group, termly parents evenings
and open door policy etc will allow Woodlea to gain recognition for its good work in this area. As always we are keen
to listen to your comments, compliments and even complaints in order to further meet the needs of our children,
their families and the local community.

Headteacher ‘drop-ins’
In addition to our open door policy I would like to offer a regular time slot for you to drop in and discuss any issues
with myself. I will be available the following additional times:-

Thursday 14th January 2.00pm – 3.00pm
Tuesday 19th January 8.30am – 9.30am
Monday 25th January 1.00pm – 2.00pm
Thursday 4th February 3.30pm – 4.30pm
Wednesday 10th February 8.15 – 9.15am

I have tried to vary times and dates to fit in around your busy family lives. If you can’t make any of these ‘parent
surgery’ times please arrange an alternative time as it is important to solve any issues before they escalate. Once we
share information we can work together to solve it.

Class Assemblies
Reminder - Please note we have made a change to our class assemblies this year. Not only do we invite you to share a
Fair Trade tea or coffee with the children, staff and other parents but additional members of staff will also be
available ‘on hand’ to discuss any year group queries you may have with regard to the curriculum eg do you know what
your child is talking about when they discuss ‘bumping’ and ‘chunking?’ There will also be a Fair Trade stall.

School Dinners
We are introducing, on a trial basis, Friday Favourites. Children have selected their favourite school meals and these
will be available for all children on a weekly basis. The first week is Friday 22 nd January and it will be ‘Fish and Chips.’
This is an ideal time for your child to try our healthy school meals and have access to the ‘help yourself’ salad bar.

We will shortly be having a week in which Y3 pupils can trial a full week’s menu. Please look out for further details.
