No 08 Week 4
21st May 2009
Dear Parents and Caregivers Another busy fortnight has passed! It seems I have provided staffing updates in every edition so far this year. Stephen Clarke has requested that his leave continue for, at least, the rest of the term which has created a vacancy within the Leadership team. Irene Lynch was successful in winning this appointment and started off on Monday as the new School Counsellor. Her presence in the office is already being felt as she exudes enthusiasm and is so passionate about working with students to improve learning outcomes. Her classroom position has been filled by Lisa De Candia who already has been working with the class on Fridays. We are still awaiting an appointment to the NIT position and are using relief staff in the interim. Graeme Smith returns to his classroom position after being a „Jack–of–all trades‟ in the office. This year he has been a classroom teacher, ICT Co-ordinator, School Counsellor and Deputy Principal. Graeme is an exceptional practitioner and I thank him for the support he has provided to staff, parents, students and me in these roles. We also thank Amy Lewis for the superb job she has done with the Year 2 class in the Green Unit. I am sure we will see her around the place in the future. Geoff Willsmore returns from long service leave next week and we welcome him back, refreshed, after his four week break. North Haven Schools has been successful in gaining funding in round one of the NATIONAL SCHOOL PRIDE PROGRAM, as part of the Australian Government‟s Building the Education Revolution package. This money will be used to provide some much needed refurbishments across the school. Several projects will be undertaken at intervals across the upcoming terms. The first project will involve upgrading the walkways between units by installing clear alysnite to create a lighter, brighter environment. Fencing will be erected to rear of units, to match the existing fence at yellow unit, and will include a foot path safety fence outside school near traffic crossing. New vertical blinds will be installed in units Pin boards will be installed in classrooms to provide much needed display space to show off great work. Unit fronts, doors and frames will be repainted in same colour as new cream painting to give a uniformed look. Project two will involve updating wet areas and purchasing new furniture for Middle Primary and Upper Primary classes. Funds will then be reassessed and if under target, other projects will be prioritised. By the end of the year North Haven Schools will be unrecognisable and an even more pleasant place to send your children. Today is Public Education Day. Students were asked to bring an “apple for their teacher” as a way of recognising the effort these people put into ensuring the future generations of the world are well equipped to be successful citizens of their world. Apple proformas were recently provided to families so that they could write a positive comment about their child‟s teacher or teachers/school in general. I encourage everybody to send their „apple‟ back tomorrow, if they haven‟t already done so, to add to the apple tree that will be on display in the front office.

A pupil free day has been scheduled for
Friday 6th June.
Teachers will be working on a variety of activities to support their professional development. Our upper primary staff will be working with teachers across the district, as part of the Peninsula Schools‟ cluster, to collaboratively plan and program units of work using the International Baccalaureate principles. Opportunities for teachers to work together and learn from each other are very beneficial and so times like pupil free days are of immense value. The OSHC program will be open to families who need care for their child/children on this day. For bookings telephone Janine or Pat on 82485844.
