Friday May 11th 2007 DEEP TO HOST FIRST HUMBER ENVIRONMENT FAIR
The Deep, Hull’s aquarium is to host the first ever Humber Environment Fair, June 2nd – 9th. The award-winning attraction is working in partnership with The Environment Agency to hold a free event to show us how to be greener. The fair is packed full with hands-on family events at the weekends and during the week there are events for the region’s business community. In addition The Environment Agency has funded 1200 places for local schoolchildren. Dr David Gibson, organiser of the event and The Deep’s Director of Husbandry and Operations explained, ‘’We’re proud to host this unique event. The Environment Agency approached us with a view to publicising World Environment Day and World Ocean Day. Since both of these dates fall closely together, we decided to hold a week-long event so we can generate awareness of the latest ways to sustain our planet to as many people as possible. Phil Young, Environment Agency said: "We are delighted to be working with The Deep and holding the first ever Humber Environment Fair. Our focus is the international theme of climate change which should be high on everyone's agenda. "We are challenging everyone to 'ask yourself' what you're currently doing to tackle climate change, what more you could be doing and what is stopping you at the moment. Why not also join in this years World Environment Day campaign which is on the 5th June 2007, visit our website at www.mendoftheworld.org" There will be a large marquee where visitors can take part in lots of hands-on fun ranging from scrap art workshops, to the Cool Seas Roadshow (June 6th, 7th & 8th), run by Andy Starbucks from the Marine Conservation Society featuring life-size, life-like models of native marine animals. Exhibitors include organisations committed to improving our environment including The Environment Agency, Marine Conservation Society, RSPB, Yorkshire Wildlife Trust and many more. Displays on recycling and an exhibition of locally produced and distributed products, such as Mr Moo’s Ice Cream are just some of what’s in store.’’ An illustrated evening talk about the Turtle Tagging project in Sri Lanka will be presented by Peter Richardson of the Marine Conservation Society on June 6th in the main marquee.
