Child health MHRA issues new advice and restrictions for use of over-the-counter children’s cough and cold medicines The advice states that over-the-counter (OTC) cough and cold medicines should not be used in children under 6 years, as there is no evidence that they work, and they can cause side-effects such as allergic reactions, effects on sleep, and hallucinations. For 6 to 12 year olds these medicines will continue to be available but will only be sold in pharmacies, with clearer advice on the packaging and from the pharmacist. The two batches sent to the UK passed all the normal tests to ensure the safety, quality and effectiveness of the product before leaving the manufacturing site in Italy. They were transported by road to the UK; whereas the samples that tested positive for Staphylococcus aureus bacteria when they reached the US had been transported by air, and thus been subject to air pressure changes (it is not known as yet whether this was responsible for the loss of sterility).
