1.    Joe used the professor’s first name to address him, this is not acceptable in
      China. If the Chinese student did so, it would sound rude or too intimate.
2.    In China it’s the student who initiates the greeting, even in the cases where it’s
      the teacher who sees the student first.
3.    In English “ 老师” can’t be used to address your British teacher, so you can’t
      address your English teacher “teacher Smith”, however, you can use “professor”

A: Did you have a good time at Zhang’s birthday party?

Culture shock
1. Lisa kept finishing all the food on her plate because she wished
  to be polite, but she made a big mistake. Because in China your
  behavior is to show that you appreciate the food and the host
  would refill more food following. But in the west, the host gives
  the guests the chance to choose what’s their favorite.
2. In the west if you were invited to have a meal at someone’s home,
  there would often be only one or two dishes. Even if it was a
  formal dinner, it would be usually just three courses: soup, main
  dish, and dessert. But in China, an informal dinner would have
  four dishes a soup, a formal dinner would have at least eight dishes
  and a soup.

   China is a country with a long history, so there
 are many customs in it.
    Firstly, you are supposed to shake hands when
 you meet someone for the first time. Secondly,
 when you eat dinner with other people, it’s rude to
 point at others with your chopsticks. Besides, if
 you are going to a party,you are supposed to
 arrive at the party on time, or a few minutes late.
 You are not supposed to give a clock or a watch
 to your friends as a present, because it means
 “death” in Chinese. “When in Rome, do as the
 Romans do. ” If you are going to China, please
 follow the rules.
