									                    GPS & GIS
 In March 1999 Magellan introduced the consumer
GIS orientated receivers - GPS 315/320
 Prior to this GIS “ready” receivers were only for the
    corporate market
 GPS 315/320 offered the user to add own user
waypoints, plus the ability to add Government POI
    (Points of Interest Data)

    Advantages of POI’s with GPS
 People now have a “ready to go” database of specific
    features.
 Ideal in Emergency situations to help locate the
    nearest “emergency” facility.
 Enabled GPS to become an even more valuable tool
to both recreation and corporate users.

               POI Development
 GPS 315/320 made up of 2 memory banks
                  - 500 User waypoint memory
                  - 18220 POI memory bank
 In addition to POI’s, GPS units also allow other
attributes such as address’ and telephone numbers
 POI’s were sourced from PSMA (Public Sector
Mapping Authority), where data ranges from Golf
    Courses to Hospital Locations.
 Over 34 different categories were sourced of which
    there are over 500,000 points

In the advent of mobile handheld computing,
advantages of merging GPS with PDA’s could be
seen.

Data was sourced from PSMA - road center lines
for Australia wide.
External mapping software company (Maptek)
was sourced for programming of PDA & GPS
unit.

 Supplied in Mapinfo *.tab format (vector)
 Road center lines separated for each state.
 Over 7Gigs of information

To overcome limited storage and security
        •Data Compressed
•Changed to Maptek/Magellan unique vector file format
•New uploading program was written to aid in data transfer

Genesis Map database allows street lookup by suburb
Problem •Road data needed suburb locations, which was absent
        from original database

Solution To use theissen polygons around suburb point locations.
•Roads segments which fell within polygon were
              given suburb name
•Roads segments which fell on the polygon boundary
a suburb appending tool was used
