Good luck! Jean-Michel Creating Your First Facebook Account Facebook has revolutionized the social networking industry. Its wide range of networking features has made it easy for people from all over the world to connect. Personally I’ve used Facebook to find people that I haven’t talked to in years, people that I’ve went to school with, and lately I’ve used it as a formidable marketing tool. If you’re new to facebook, I recommend that you go ahead and register for an account. It is 100% free to join, and the account creation process is instant. It’s pretty simple to signup for a facebook account. Let’s go over these steps. Head on over to www.facebook.com and enter the details as instructed on the form that appears on the home page. Once you’ve entered this information you’ll be prompted to enter the captcha image code for verification purposes. Simply enter the captcha code as it appears within the image. Once you’ve entered this information you’ll be requested to confirm your registration by checking your email account. Log into your email account and click on the verification link. By completing this action you’ve just confirmed your Facebook account. You can then complete the other steps of your profile by entering your education details along with selecting a network. A network can be a school, country, specific city or location, or workplace. If your main goal is to network with people from your school, then you would enter the name of the school and you’ll become a member of that network. It’s very important that you fill out as much information as possible regarding your profile. Enter correct details for each aspect, so you appear as a real person. Your goal is to ensure that your profile is lively, filled with accurate content and that people will truly get the opportunity to know you. Once your profile is setup completely, then it’s time to move on to how you are going to use facebook’s networking options to start building a targeted list network. Monetizing Facebook Account This section is really important, you have to understand it perfectly before you go further. As I mentioned prior you can make money with Facebook by generating as much traffic as possible to your website or to an affiliate website. The more traffic you generate obviously the more money you’ll make. When looking for ways to make money with facebook, you can decide if you’re going to be promoting your own products and services OR if you will be using an affiliate program OR multiple affiliate programs. There are many CPA offers that are available for promotion using Facebook. CPA offers are simply COST PER ACTION offers where the user has to do a specific task. If the user completes the task you are paid a fee for the lead or sale. One of the most popular CPA offers is email submission and zip submission offers. These are popular because it does not take much effort for the user to complete the task. Email submission offers only request the user to submit their email address. Upon the user submitting their email address you usually paid a fee between $11.50. This can quickly add up to significant income if you can generate a swarm of traffic. You can also bring leads and sales to other CPAs offer that will require more information for the user to enter but the payout will be much higher. For starters, I’d definitely recommend to start with such offers (free trials, credit evaluation, etc…) Companies such as ClickBooth.com, HydraNetwork.com, NeverBlueAds.com, Azoogleads.com, CJ.com are examples of companies that offer a wide range of CPA offers. You can also promote virtual products such as online courses, softwares, there are tons of those on Clickbank.com, where you can register for a free account. You can then use your facebook account to promote these offers. How will we do that? Here comes the next step! Starting a New Group Before to go further in this step, I’d recommend you, if you’re account is new, to add friends (at least 100-200). To do this, just look for groups that are related to your niche and add whoever you like. You can write them a simple message to make sure they accept you but you don’t have to, most people will add you without asking a single question. So, why the hell are we starting a new group? Actually, your group will be your primary tool to monetize your Facebook account. You can create multiple groups as well with one account or you can create 3-4 niche-related groups per account. Either choices are good, do whatever suits you. When you’re admin of a certain group, you have the possibilities to contact the group members so you’ll be basically building a brand new list hosted on Facebook. Of course there is still that one little issue of actually starting the group. Let’s go over now the aspects for creating the group, and how to build your member base starting from scratch. First you’ll need to create a group name. If you are familiar with basic search engine optimization techniques then you’ll know the importance of the title or name of the group. If your niche is about “weight loss” then you must ensure that the term “weight loss” is part of the group name. For example “Weight Loss & Diet Tips” would be a good name for the group. It ensures that when a search is done for “Weight Loss” that your group should be among the relevant results, and also it has another keyword term which is “Diet Tips”. I would recommend having your primary and secondary keywords within the group name. Your primary keyword is your main keyword, and the secondary keyword is the second term that you would like to use, but has less importance when compared to the first. Another good tip is to ensure your primary keyword is listed before your secondary keyword. For example if your primary keyword is “weight loss then it needs to appear first in the group name, no other word should appear before it. After you’ve decided on the group name, the next step is to write a valid description. Your description should be well optimized as well for search purposes. Therefore you should ensure that your major keywords such as “weight loss” and “diet tips” appear within the body description. It is best to ensure those keywords appear within the first two to three sentences of your description. I would also recommend having the words appear at least one more time within the body of the description. Ensure that your description gives a clear depiction of what the group has to offer. Remember there are thousands of other groups out there, so you want to ensure that your group stands out from the crowd. It’s best to always let the potential group members know that your group will be fully participative and active, and you must appear to be an expert within the niche. If you have any credentials within the niche, be sure to list those as part of your description. Anything you can find to give yourself and advantage and appear to be truly an expert within the niche. It’s also a good idea to always mention that you are offering free tips and strategies on how to accomplish the goal of the group. If the group is about weight loss, then mention that by joining the group, you’ll be sharing lots of tips and strategies on how to lose weight. It’s also good to provide clear instructions on HOW to be a good member of the group. It means that you can ask them to invite your friends that might like your group, write a presentation post in the wall so your group will look very active, etc… Always select the most relevant group category. The group category is where users who are browsing for groups will find your group within the specified category. The more relevant your group is the more likely you’ll be able to attract members. Before creating your group, take a look at the categories available. Once you are sure your niche can easily fit into one of the listed categories, then go ahead and create the group. The other fields such as email, street, city/town etc are all self explanatory, so you simply input the required data. For the email aspect, you should ensure you enter an email address that you actually check. It’s highly possible that you may receive emails from members from time to time, so be ready to reply to those emails. Once you’ve created the group, what next? It’s pretty simple; you start the process of acquiring group members. The first step should always be inviting your friends to become a member of the group. I’m sure that you would know people on facebook and have friends, therefore those are the first people you’ll target to grow your member base. Send out invitation requests to all your friends letting them know you’ve started a new group and that you would love for them to join. Even though all of your friends may not be interested in the niche topic, they may still join to help you out. It’s important that you have a member’s base that is growing and that you are not the only active member of the group. Encourage as many of your friends as possible to join the group and make posts so that the group appears to be active and growing. A group that appears to be active basically has a big neon flashing sign saying “Come on in” and join the fun. A group that is dead is simply overlooked and the potential member joins a competing group that appears to be more active. When you have enough of your friends on board, you can now try another trick which is to befriend members of competing groups. In the example that I’ve been focusing on which deals with “Weight Loss” the competing group would be “Weight Loss & Training Tips”. This is an established group with over 3000 members. The first thing I’ll do is join the group. Once I’ve joined the group, I’ll go to the option where I can browse the members of the group. By browsing the members of the group I’m able to target these members as they are people who are interested in the niche you are targeting with your group. You’ll find that people will join many groups, as they are looking for as much information as possible. Once your group has its own unique content and if you’ve followed my guideline to ensure that your group surpasses what their current group has to offer, then you’ll have no problem having them join your group. It’s very important that before you start sending group invitations to members of another group that your group is already somewhat active and has quality information. No one wants to join a dead group. Please keep that in mind at all times. The next step would be to send out friend requests to members of the group. That’s why it’s important that you become a member of the competing group “first”. When you send a friend request to members of a competing group, you should ensure you have something in common with them. In this case, you both are members of a particular group, so by default that is what you share in common. You both have interest within a particular niche. You’ll find that some will accept your friend request, others may ignore it, and others may send you a message first asking “who are you?”. In the case of the message, you simply reply politely saying you too are a member of the group you share in common, and you’ve added them based on this. Obviously you should type something that is more friendly and detailed than that, but you get the idea. Facebook does have a limit to the number of friend requests you can send per day, but I do not believe there is any limit on group invitation requests. Your goal is to send group invitations to all of your friends, find members of a competing group and send friend requests and group invitations to them as well, and finally to have your friends also send out group invitations. You need to key in on the viral effect. It cannot be you alone who is promoting the group or you’ll more than likely fail. It’s important that you have your friends sending out group invitations as well. A simple message to your friends to send out notifications to their friends about your group will start this process. If you can encourage at least 20 of your friends to do this, you can start that viral effect. Perhaps with even less than that you could start seeing some progress, but I would expect that 20 of your friends sending out invitations should allow you to see some growth. Once you have members within the group, you can also encourage them to invite other users to join the group. Always be encouraging your group members to actively seek new members for the group. You can do this as a joint venture. Joint Venture on Facebook Creating Joint Venture is the KEY of your success on Facebook. As you’ve seen, creating a group is pretty easy BUT creating a popular and successful group requires a little more attention and work as well. So, how can we use joint ventures to boost our facebook group? For example, if members of your group have created another group of their own or even a fan page (we will go through this later on) within another niche, you can do a joint venture blast. A joint venture blast is simply where you will notify all of your group members about another group they can join, and in return the group owner that you are promoting will promote your group to their members as well. It’s a win win situation for both parties. The end result will be steady growth for both groups. I would encourage you to go through your friends list, and the list of your group members to see who owns and operates a group and request a joint venture. Even with groups where you do not know the person, a friendly message stating you would like to do a joint venture blast can result in more members. Simply explain to the group owner that you will send an invitation to your group members to join their group, and they can do the same in return. You can also simply send a message to your group members. Here is a message I send time to time to my members. Subject: Boost The Members Number of Your Group Hello there! Hope you're doing great and your [Group Activity] is getting better and better. Do you have a group on Facebook? If yes, maybe you’ll be interested on what I can do for you. Send me a invite to join your group with a memo that says "i'd like help growing my group, I'm from your [Group Name]".. I'll check it out and if it's a group supporting [subject] or something I feel comfortable inviting my friends to, I'll invite my friends ([friends amount] for now) to your group and then you invite yours to my group.. Simple and fast. You must have at least 100 [or whatever number you like] friends to invite to the group, sorry due to the time it takes to invite friends and the large size of our group I have to limit it to people who will invite more than 100 people to the group. If you do not have a group, well, if you could invite some of your friends to the [Group Name] group, I'd be great. The more members we are the more the quality of the group content will increase. Thanks for reading this, if you have any questions, please, don't hesitate. Happy Thanksgiving by the way! That’s it! Be responsive; answer quickly, be smart and everything will go smoothly. With your group membership now growing you can continue to repeat this process a few times each month to ensure that your membership base is growing. Eventually your group will start to grow on its own through searches and from users browsing the facebook group directory. It’s always important though to keep your group members happy. The best way to do this is to continue to post high quality and relevant information. Keep updating your group with informative content that really helps the group members. The more relevant information your post, the more likely you’ll find group members recommending your group to others without any “push” from you. Analyzing Groups As I said before, to get more members to your group, you’ll have to add members of groups relevant to your niche. With facebook the options are endless with regards to who you can network with. It’s really the perfect tool for building a targeted list. Let’s visit the groups option in facebook. This is the area where we’ll be networking with other people who share similar interests to what you can offer, whether it’s a product or service. The groups option in facebook will be the most essential aspect to your success. Once you are at the groups page, you’ll see the option to browse groups, create a group and search for groups. We’ll start by first searching for groups that matches our niche. The goal here is to view any groups that maybe considered your “competition”. Any group that matches your niche, you’ll want to analyze. By analyze I simply mean view the number of members the group has, how active the group is, and if they are marketing any products or services within the group that are similar to what you have to offer. For example, let’s say, again, that your niche is “weight loss”. Your product helps people to lose weight, so your initial group search will focus on finding groups that deal with weight loss. Upon doing the search you’ll be presented with a list of groups that best match your keyword phrase. By default facebook lists the most popular groups first, therefore you can quickly view who will be your major competition. Your goal is to replace that particular group as the number one group for your target key phrase. In the example the number one group under the keyword “weight loss” is a group called “Weight Loss and Training Tips”. The group has over 3000 members. That’s a pretty sizeable member’s base, and it’s a highly targeted group of people who will be interested in any weight loss product you may have to offer. Being the owner of the group you have the option to post news items, and many of these news items can link to products or services that you recommend. It can also be a link to your website or blog where you discuss in further detail the products and services that you offer. If you review the example group “Weight Loss and Training Tips” you’ll see that the news section contains links to their website. There is also an option for “Posted Items” this is where you can post any videos or anything that you feel will be helpful to the members of the group. If you review the example again, you’ll see that the “Posted Items” have links back to the group creator’s website which highlights a product or service that they recommend. This is how you can easily make money with your group. You gain the trust of the group members by providing insightful and informative posts that specifically relate to their interest. In this case the group is all about “weight loss” so the focus of all the items that are posted, and the website’s recommended correlate to information, products and services that the group members would be interested in reviewing. Another key aspect to the groups, is the discussion board. You need to ensure you have an action discussion board that highlights questions and issues that relate to the niche of the group. Again, using the example of the group “Weight Loss and Training Tips” you’ll notice that the discussion board is active. At the time of writing this report it had over 100 discussion topics. As the owner of the group, if you find that certain discussion posts have gone unanswered it is your job to step in and answer the question or reply to the post that was made. This will encourage others to follow suit. When you review the discussion board of the example group you’ll notice that the group creator is extremely active within the group. That is one of the main ingredients to having a successful group. You need to show interest in your group members, gain their trust, and they’ll eventually start purchasing the products and services you recommend. First, you lay the foundation, provide quality articles and information within the group, answer their questions, appear as an expert within the niche, and voila you have a targeted group that you can market your products and services. Generating a Mailing List Your objective should now be to take these group members and have them be part of your active mailing list. To do this, you can post a “news item” within the group that highlights the benefits of joining your mailing list. You mention the fact that the members of the group who join your mailing list will be provided valuable information that is not available within the group. You must give them a reason to join your list. I’ve found that one of the best ways to do this is to give away a free ebook that relates to the niche. In the ebook you can discuss the basic principles of the niche. For example if your niche is “weight loss” then the ebook will go over the various ways they can lose weight. The ebook will be informative, but it will also be highlighting a particular product that can speed up the process of losing weight. You can recommend a weight loss supplement or exercise regimen that is proven to aid in fast weight loss. This product can be an affiliate product where you’ll earn a commission from each sale. If you’ve never setup a mailing list before, I’ve listed below three of the best mailing list management services currently available. Aweber.com GetResponse.com ConstantContact.com These three services allow you to create an opt-in subscription box where you users can enter their name and email address for further updates about your product or service. You’ll be using one of the services above to host your mailing list, along with logging into the particular service and sending broadcast messages to your user. Simply create a page on your website that explains the benefits of joining your mailing list and have your opt-in subscriber box listed on that page. For an example see below: This is often called a “Squeeze Page” and it invites the user to join your mailing list to get more information about a product or service and to download a free report. The person signs up to your mailing list by confirming their email address, and you now have a new subscriber that you can market to. You have to “sell” the user on the benefits of registering to your list, and it’s important that you make it clear that you won’t be spamming them with irrelevant information. You need to keep your mailings to be targeted to the niche of the group, otherwise you’ll start receiving unsubscribe requests. Keep the information targeted, insightful and very informative and you’ll have long standing members. Once you have your squeeze page setup, you should then add a “News Feed” to your group, along with posting it as a “Posted Item”. You can take it a step further as well by having the official link to your website be your squeeze page, this way when visitors go to that page they’ll be shown your squeeze page. Another option to build your list is to have an opt-in box prominently displayed on every page on your site. For example if you have a two column site, then you can have your opt-in box to be the first item seen on the right column. This way when a user branches off from your group to a page on your site, they’ll have the option to opt-in to your mailing list. Using Social Networks To Supplement Your Facebook Group There are other ways to build your facebook groups and that’s by utilizing other social networking services to promote your groups page. I’m sure you’ve heard of other social networking sites such as Myspace.com, Twitter.com, Hi5.com, Bebo.com and the list continues. There are many social networking sites you can join and in turn use your profile to promote your facebook group. Twitter.com is a very good tool that can be used for promoting your group. With Twitter you can create a free account and invite others to create an account as well. Those you invite can become “followers”. Followers are simply your friends. These are people who chosen to follow any posts that you make on your Twitter account. When these people follow you, part of your “status updates” can be regarding your group and it can be an invitation to join your facebook group. Since these people are following you on Twitter they are more than likely to join your group on Facebook. The same thing applies on Myspace and other social networking sites. If you have accounts on Myspace, you can have those friends be notified about your facebook group by sending bulletins, and sending messages to your Myspace friends. If you do not have a Myspace account, but have friends that do have an account you can have those friends send the bulletins and notifications to join your group. Getting Traffic Using Facebook Now that you’ve got a successful group you should be generating traffic to your website or any affiliate site you maybe promoting. Besides using groups there are other ways you can generate traffic using facebook. One of the simplest ways to generate traffic using facebook is to ensure you have listed a website address in your profile. People who are not your friend but are within your network may stumble upon your profile once it’s “open” and available for viewing. It’s very important that you list your website address in your profile. This simple tip can give you a few visitors to your website. Another great tip is to always update your status. Whenever you update your status it updates within the feed of your friends, therefore they are more inclined to visit your profile, and by doing so they can possibly visit your website. I’ve also used this tactic for generating traffic from facebook. It’s pretty easy to create a video that can be uploaded to YouTube. With sites such as AniMoto.com you can create a video simply using text and images. I would invite you to visit that site and create a video based off their instructions. In the video you will be promoting your website. Ensure that your video begins and ends with your website address and that it is watermarked throughout the entire video. Your goal is to have that address embedded into the brain of the person watching the video. Once you have created the video, simply go to the “Add Video” option in facebook and add the video to your profile. You can also add the video as a “Posted Item” and it will appear in your profile as well. When you post the video all your friends will receive an update within their feed showing that you’ve added a new video or a posted item. More than likely they will view, especially if it is a video. A tip that may seem obscure or not really talked about is something as simple as having a t-shirt created with your website address printed on it. It may cost you about $20 or so to get the t-shirt printed, but it’s a good idea to have your website address printed in big bold letters on a t-shirt, then proceed to take a photo with that t-shirt and have it posted as your default photo on your facebook profile. It’s important that you find little creative ways to squeeze as many visitors as possible to your site. The curiosity factor from people viewing your profile will result in more traffic to your site. Having this picture as your default photo will give you a few extra hits. Just ensure that the website address is clearly legible in the photo you upload. Another option is to utilize the “Share Link” option in facebook to generate further traffic. You can “share a link” with facebook users and of course this link will be your website. Do not abuse this function though as it could appear as if you are spamming facebook with your links. You may also find that writing “notes” is a good way to generate traffic. You can generate notes using facebook and invite your friends to comment on the note. In the note you can discuss a particular issue, and then have the issue tied into your website, and provide a link to your website within the note. It’s another great way to generate traffic using all the networking tools that Facebook has to offer. If you are looking for paid ways to generate traffic, then you can place advertisements within facebook applications or even have your own application built to display your own advertisements. Facebook applications are very popular and there are websites where you can pay to have your advertisement displayed on dozens if not thousands of facebook applications. I’ve listed a few of the more popular facebook application advertising websites. SocialMedia.com Super Rewards It’s highly possible to create a facebook application. There are many programmers and services available where you can hire someone or a company to create a facebook application. When creating your application is always critical that it should be based off an idea that can grow virally, as there is a lot of competition. For a listing of the various applications currently available on facebook see the link below Facebook Applications Directory Sites such as Scriptlance.com, Elance.com, Guru.com, RentaCoder.com (my favourite) and GetAFreelancer.com are where you can find facebook application developers who can create an application that can then be added to the facebook directory. If you decide to create an application always remember to have the option to prominently display your website within the application to capitalize on the application’s traffic. Facebook’s Advertising System Facebook has launched a new advertising system where you can display a small graphic and text ad that will appear to the members of facebook. What’s really great about this advertising system is the option to select your audience based on demographics. You have the ability to select by age, gender, location, which can lead to ensuring the right audience is viewing your ad. The facebook advertising system is based on a pay per click module, so you have to place a minimum bid of 5 cents per click to be able to participate. In most cases you will not receive much exposure at that bid rate. By default facebook analyzes your ad and demographics criteria and suggests a bid range that is best suited to receiving impressions and clicks. You also have the option to setting a daily budget, this way you can be assured you are not running the risk of having little to no return on investment. You simply input the amount you are willing to spend a day. The facebook advertising platform can be hit or miss. You’ll have to go through a period of testing since some ads work and others crash and burn. I’ve found that the best way to target facebook users is to appeal to the interests. If your advertisement appears as if it is talking to the user, then you’ve got a much better chance of having a successful campaign. Always write your ads if you are talking to the user more so than blatantly advertising a product. There is a big difference between the two. One speaks to the user and addresses them personally while the other throws them into a generic category and makes no attempt to personalize or address the user as an individual. Therefore when you write your ad, ensure you think along the lines of how you would recommend a product to someone. An advertisement that can combine addressing a need with personalization will attract more clicks than an ad that is generic. Above all else, it’s not as difficult as it may appear to make money with Facebook. I’ve outlined a tremendous amount of ways you can utilize facebook to build groups to promote your product and affiliate products. What’s left for you to do now is to actually take action and get started. Quick Start Action Plan To get you started I’ve outlined a fast start action plan for the aspect that relates to generating and creating a group on Facebook. Keep in mind that it is this aspect that can literally generate you a steady flow of income month to month using Facebook. Step #1: Register your facebook account & create a detailed profile.
