INPORT WATCH TYPE AND DUTY ROTATION FOR SA/FA/SNFN: Until qualified, new members stand duty every 3rd day. Upon qualification members are generally on duty every 4 to 6 days depending upon the number of qualified personnel onboard. UNDERWAY WATCH TYPE AND DUTY ROTATION FOR SA/SN: Until helmsman/lookout qualified new members stand 4 hours on watch, 8 hours off. UNDERWAY WATCH TYPE AND DUTY ROTATION FOR FA/FN: Until JE qualified new members stand 4 hours on watch, 8 hours off. SPECIAL PROCEDURES FOR REPORTING AFTER HOURS: Call your sponsor once flight or ferry arrangements have been made to ensure that someone is available to meet you. IF UNIT IS UNDERWAY, WHERE TO REPORT: If MAPLE is underway, new members report to the Cutter Support Team (CST) Office located on the ship’s pier. The number for the CST Office is (907) 738-1591 or (907) 966-5578. HOW MUCH PERSONAL STORAGE SPACE: Aboard MAPLE you will have 13 CUBIC FEET within a wall locker and storage space under your rack. Single members will also have additional storage space in their assigned barracks room. MAPLE and AIRSTA Sitka can administer DANTES and CLEP courses for college credits. RATINGS PRESENT AT UNIT: BM, MK DC, FS, SK, YN, EM, IT, HS and ET. NAME OF NEAREST CITY AND DISTANCE: By boat, Juneau is 175 NM and Ketchikan is 335 NM. Both cities are serviced by Alaska Airlines and are an approximately ½ hour and 1 hour flights, respectively. NAME OF NEAREST MILITARY FACILITY AND DISTANCE: MAPLE is co-located in Sitka with CG Air Station Sitka, which has a medical clinic, all hands club, gymnasium, and morale equipment available for military members’ use. LOCATION OF NEAREST EXCHANGE AND COMMISSARY: ISC Ketchikan is the nearest exchange, but it can only be accessed by ferry or plane. Anchorage (approximately 3 hour flight) has both an exchange and commissary.

RELIGIOUS DENOMINATIONS IN THE AREA: Catholic, Presbyterian, Methodist, Lutheran, Russian Orthodox, Mormon, and Baptist. COMMON DESTINATIONS OF DEPLOYMENTS: MAPLE generally deploys to Southeast Alaska (including port calls in Juneau and Ketchikan) on one to two week deployments. Occasionally MAPLE is deployed to Valdez, Kodiak, Seattle or Hawaii. UNIFORM TO REPORT IN: Service Dress Blue. IF SPONSOR IS NOT AVAILIBLE, RECRUIT SHOULD ASK FOR: Command Duty Officer. ANY OTHER INFORMATION A NEWLY ARRIVING APPRENTICE NEEDS TO KNOW: Sitka is located on Baranof Island, which is accessible only by air or boat. There are only 14 miles of road in Sitka. There are three grocery stores, several convenience stores, two hardware stores, two craft stores, and two movie theaters. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Sitka is located in the Tongass National Forest, a temperate rainforest. MEMBERS WITHOUT DEPENDENTS IS MESSING AVAILABLE: Onboard QUARTERS AND OR BARRACKS AVAILABLE: When you report to MAPLE you will be assignment to a barracks room at AIRSTA Sitka. Each barracks room has a bed, desk, dresser, armoire bathroom facility, and a small refrigerator microwave combo. As personnel depart from the Sitka area under orders, senior non-rated personnel will move up to the option for assignment to government leased housing off-base. Verify ship’s schedule with your sponsor to ensure your dependents will have time to settle in before Cutter Maple gets underway.
NOTE: If you are planning to travel via personal vehicle through Canada, you and your dependents must possess valid passports. A passport is NOT required for travel from Washington to Sitka via ferry (Alaska Marine Highway).
