RISK WARNING UNDER SECTION 5M OF THE CIVIL LIABILITY ACT 2002 Sporting Activities PLC Sydney organises many individual and team sporting activities during the course of a year. Students participating in these sporting activities take part in practice and in competitions. The Association of Heads of Independent Girls’ Schools (AHIGS) administers and convenes IGSSA inter - school sporting activities in which many students, including students of this school, participate. PLC Sydney and AHIGS expects students to take responsibility for their own safety by wearing compulsory safety equipment, by thinking carefully about the use of safety equipment that is highly recommended and by behaving in a safe and responsible manner towards team members, opponents, spectators, officials, property and grounds. While PLC Sydney and AHIGS take measures to make the sporting activities as safe as possible for participants, there is a risk that students can be injured and suffer loss (including financial loss) and damage as a result of their participation in these sporting activities, whether at training or in actual events. Injury can occur while the student is engaging in or watching a sporting activity, or travelling to and from the event. The injury may result from a student's actions or the actions of others. On some occasions, an injury can be serious (such as torn ligaments, dislocations, back injuries, concussion or broken bones). In very rare cases an injury can be life threatening or result in permanent disability. If a student has a pre-existing injury, participating in a sporting activity could result in an exacerbation of that injury. Students could also suffer loss as a result of their personal property being lost, stolen, damaged or destroyed.

SOME HEALTH REMINDERS FOR SPORT GENERAL REMINDERS Remember your water and sunblock (sp30+) (if playing outdoors) INJURIES Any injury is to be reported to the Convenor at the venue at which you are playing. DANGERS OF SHARING PERSONAL EQUIPMENT Please remind your daughters NOT to share sports water bottles, soft drink cans, cups, lip balm, towels or face washers. On a hot day at sport, when the girls have forgotten to bring an item, it is so easy to be tempted to share a drink, or towel. However the danger in doing so is the chance of contracting a communicable disease which is spread through physical contact, by airborne particles or by exchange of body fluids such as saliva, blood etc MOUTHGUARDS Mouth guards are commonly worn in sporting events where there is a serious risk of a blow to the mouth or jaw area resulting in trauma to the teeth and gums. Mouthguards are compulsory for Hockey and strongly recommended for Netball. PLC strongly recommends the wearing of a custom fitted mouth guard. These are made by a dental professional using an impression of the teeth from special shock absorbing plastic. A custom fitted mouthguard fits a person’s mouth perfectly. The accurate fit and control of the thickness maximizes the shock absorbing effect. They fit comfortably and won’t interfere with breathing. PERSONAL INSURANCE While there is a non contributory Sporting Injuries Insurance Scheme for which information may be found at http://www.sports.det.nsw.edu.au/spguide/ns wsport.htm this only provides payment to the seriously injured and the sum is not large. PLC strongly encourages families to take out their own private health insurance should your daughter be involved in sporting activities.
The information is of a general nature. Individual circumstances may require modification of general advice from an appropriate health professional.

PLAYERS CODE OF CONDUCT
 All players should be punctual to all practices and matches and dressed in the correct uniform for your particular sport. This includes any specific safety equipment such as mouth guards, shin pads, ankle guards etc.  Play a game because you enjoy it, not because someone else wants you to play. However, once you commit yourself to a team for a season, honour that commitment.  Never argue with an umpire or official. If you have a query speak to your captain, who may then wish to discuss this with your PE Teacher or coach responsible for your team. If she or he sees fit they may approach the official at an appropriate break during or after the game.  Control your temper. Verbal abuse of officials or other players, using foul language, deliberately fouling or provoking an opponent and throwing equipment is not acceptable or permitted in any sport.  Be a good sport. Cheer or clap all good plays regardless of whether they are made by your team or your opponents. Never cheer or clap a poor performance that results in an advantage to your team.
