People with eating disorders, in particular those with anorexia nervosa, are at high risk in terms of their
health and safety. Indeed eating disorders have the highest mortality of any psychiatric disorder with
both physical complications and suicidal behaviour contributing to this risk.
This one-day course in partnership with the Yorkshire Centre for Eating Disorders (‘BEAT’ Eating
Disorder Service of the Year – 2012) is designed to allow you to learn the skills needed to assess both
physical and psychological risk in people with eating disorders. You will also receive an update on
mortality in eating disorders, including discussion of balancing physical against psychological risks and
practical information on the MARSIPAN (Management of Really Sick Patients with Anorexia Nervosa)
report recently published by the Royal College of Psychiatrists.
The aim of this course is to provide an overview of risk management in patients with eating disorders.
This is vital information for psychiatrists, GPs, clinical psychologists and other health professionals as
patients with eating disorders can present in a variety of clinical settings and carry the highest mortality
of any psychiatric disorder with both psychological and physical risk being high.
After you have attended this course you will be able to:
assess physical and psychological risk in patients with eating disorders in a variety of clinical settings
demonstrate knowledge of risk management in patients with eating disorders
demonstrate up-to-date knowledge of the MARSIPAN (RCPsych) report
