St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School Newsletter Friday 27th February 2009 Tel: 01943 463840 Fax: 01943 464191 Web: www.stjosephsotley.org.uk Email: smithj24@leedslearning.net Ash Wednesday Mass The whole school attended Mass on Wednesday to mark the beginning of Lent. After Mass, staff were inundated with parishioners who were praising the children for their prayerfulness, singing and behaviour. One parishioner said “You should be very proud of them and so should their parents”. We are, aren’t we?! CAFOD CAFOD Lenten feast day is to be held on Friday 6th March this year. Thinking of starving children in deprived areas of the world, adults might like to have only one main meal on this day and children perhaps refuse a treat. You may wish to contribute money that you save in this way to CAFOD in the envelope sent home today. Please note that Year 6 children will be participating in the CAFOD Service in church on Friday 6 th March at 11.30am. Do come along and join them. VOUCHERS We are still collecting Books for Schools Vouchers which are in the Times Newspaper each day and on the top of Nestle Cereal packets. Please send them in with the children to post into the box situated in the Office area. Thank you – Mrs Jamieson Books for Schools Vouchers Sainsbury’s Active Kids Vouchers Thank you to all parents who have already sent in their Sainsbury’s vouchers. We are hoping for a bumper number this time around due to the local Sainsbury’s now on our doorstep! The collection box in the Office area. Mrs Harvey Morrisons Gardening Vouchers Thank you all very much for your generous donations to the Morrisons Voucher Scheme which ran last year. We would like to let you all know that so far we have managed to ‘cash’ the vouchers in for a large spade, small trowels and small forks. We have another order in the pipeline and will let you know when that arrives. We hope it will be soon as the current Gardening Club will resume on Monday 9th March. Mrs Brook and Mrs Mallott - Manning Waitrose Community Matters Scheme From Saturday 28h February for four weeks, our school will appear as one of the three good causes in the Waitrose Community Matters Scheme. The scheme encourages Shoppers to choose one from three local charities, and place their token in the relevant box. Based on the percentage of tokens in the box, each charity receives a percentage of cash for their own project. We have decided to put the money received towards some large playground games, like chess for example. If you are shopping in Waitrose over the next four weeks, we are sure you and your family and friends will support our school. Thank you. Bag 4 School Mother’s Day Stall Otley Carnival Meeting - Thursday 5th March, 2.30 pm in the staff room! We will be having a second meeting to finalise ideas, start allocating jobs and collating resources! If you are able to come we would love to see you. If you have ideas about our theme ‘St. Joseph’s returns to the dark ages!’ then please bring your examples to the meeting. Also we still need fur, old plain sheets, old headbands (for recovering) and any plain green fabric you might just have laying around…. well if you don’t ask?!! Please send it into school clearly marked so it doesn’t end up going to our bag 4 school appeal! Many thanks for your continued support-The Carnival Committee. Tickets are now available from the school Office for the annual Quiz Nite to be held at Otliensians Rugby Club on Friday 27th March. The tickets are priced at £3, to include a chilli supper. This social event has previously been a sell out and with a limit on the number of tickets available, they will be sold on a first come, first served basis. If anyone can provide a pot of chilli on the night, please see Mrs Smith. Thank you. QUIZ NITE – FRIDAY 27TH MARCH 2009 7.30PM In School this week …… Year Six: We have really stretched our imaginations during Literacy as we finished our short stories of no more than 8 paragraphs in length. There are some fantastic authors in Year 6! During Numeracy we have used the ‘inverse’ operation to check two-step word problems. We have also started our new Geography topic this week on a ‘Contrasting Locality’. Our focus this week was looking at Otley and the history of the town. We produced some great fact files on our own locality. Well done everyone! Mr Garden & Mrs Pratt Year Five: Year 5 have been learning and writing about Martin Luther King. It seems we have some budding journalists in our class. A special mention to Megan Lupton who has taken her interest home! Miss Tymoshyshyn & Mrs Condliffe Year Four: In Literacy this week we have started looking at stories set in imaginary worlds. In PE we have started orienteering. As this will be mainly outside, please could the children bring in jogging bottoms or tracksuit bottoms if possible so the children don’t get cold. Our class Mass is on Wednesday next week (4 th March) at 9.30am. All family and friends are very welcome. Mrs Harvey, Mrs Bates, Miss Mallott – Manning & Mrs Cheetham Year Three: A short but busy week in Year 3. We have been weighing and measuring and I hope the buns made it home after all we so carefully weighed the flour, sugar, margarine and just out of interest….. the eggs! The half – term homework to prepare and serve a meal was a great success. I was delighted with the work that came back and am looking into the suggestion of one member of Year 3 who felt we should give up on ‘the school thing’ and open a restaurant instead! Could it be Porsches all round to Year 3 parents this year?!! Mrs Heatley & Miss Abbott Year Two: Year 2 have been hopping mad, finishing off their Toad and Frog Multimodal story on the laptops AND creating wonderful collage pictures of the two green animals. Mr Gallacher & Mrs Boyce Year One: This week in Art we have been making and decorating clay tiles. In Literacy we have been trying to write recounts of events that happened to us. We all seem to have really good memories (thankfully!). Mrs Jamieson, Mrs Patterson, Mrs Skeoch & Mrs Hodgson Reception: The children have enjoyed starting our ‘Homes’ topic and talking about their own homes. Today we have had an exciting time making and tasting chapattis after reading a book about the lives of children in India. Next week we will be able to dress up in our Indian clothes and cook chapattis in ‘our kitchen’. Mrs Brook & Miss Procter Thought for the Week: It’s better to look ahead and prepare than to look back in despair
