Time Off??
Maternity Leave: Time off from work allows a women to give birth, recover and begin to care for her new baby.
– Some employers offer several weeks and some several months (usually unpaid) – Federal Law requires employers with over 50 workers to give 12 weeks of unpaid leave
Other Children??
• Prepare school-age Children
– Include them in plans – Change living space – Talk about changes – Sibling classes – Tour the hospital – Reassure – Be aware of regression – falling back on previous behaviors. (ex. Having accidents after potty trained)
Choosing a Pediatrician
• • • • When/is the doctor available by phone? How should emergencies be handled Which Hospital? How often should/will the doctor see the child as it grows. • What are the doctors views on breastfeeding vs. formula • What is the doctor’s philosophy on guidance.
What to Feed……
• Formula: A powder or concentrate that contains milk as well as other nutrients specially designed for babies
VS.
• Breastmilk
Breastfeeding Advantages
• • • • • • • Best source of nutrition Gives the baby immunities May boost brain development Reduces Allergies Causes fewer digestive problems Speeds the recovery of the Mother Reduces the risk of ovarian and breast cancer in the Mother • Is conveniently available at all times • FREE!
Breastfeeding Disadvantages
• Father can’t participate • Baby has to be fed more often • Sometimes for medical reasons breastfeeding is not recommended • May be Painful for Mother • May be difficult because of schedule (work)
Bottle Feeding Advantages
• Allows Father to participate • Allows Mother to have a more flexible schedule • Eliminates concerns about Mothers diet or Medication • Babies need feeding less often
Bottle Feeding Disadvantages
• Can be expensive ($25 per can) • Does not give baby any natural immunities • Involves greater risk of baby developing allergies • Creates risk that baby may not be given close physical contact during feeding.
