Academy
Increasing Academic Success
Building Relationships
Why?
Transition from middle to high school is a
pivotal year.

This transition year is important.

This is the year that has the greatest
influence on a student’s future
academic success.
Why?
To provide student’s with a team of
teachers and peers for the pivotal
transition year.
To provide a framework for teachers
to:
   Facilitate ongoing communication
   Share successful strategies
   Provide timely effective intervention
Background
   2006 – Administrator and cross-curricular team
    visit Freshman Academy program
       Corbin High School, Corbin, KY
       LOHS dialogue and strategizing begin
   2010 – 2011 Modified Block Schedule
    Implemented
       allowing flexibility for Freshman Academy schedule
   2011 – 2012 – Freshman Academy Initiative
    consisting of volunteer teachers and supported
    by Administration have:
       developed program strategies
       created a plan to educate district and community
        about the initiative
Logistics
            of an exclusive freshman locker pod
 Possibility
 Lunch will remain in the same format –
  students will have A, B, C or D lunch
 Classes will be integrated throughout building
  due to subject specific classrooms
 Counselor and STAR assignments will remain
  the same
Team Structure
The Freshman Academy will have seven teams.

Teams will consist of three teachers.

Each team will have a combination of three
subjects from these academic areas:
     Business
     ELA
     Math
     Science
     Social Studies
     World Language
