        Spring
                      By James Middleton
The mysterious unexplainable celebration of “Groundhog
Day” occurred last week on February 2 and, according to
myth surrounding this inimitable rodent, if he, allegedly,
sees his shadow, there will be six more weeks of winter.
However, if he does not see his shadow, there will be an
early spring that will blossom across North America. No
one has ever explained if the groundhog has any idea what
a shadow is much less to use the phenomena as a means to
predict the weather.
The aggrandized furry rodent did not see his shadow
and through the wonders of meteorological prognostication,
the anti-social “Punxsutawney Phil,” appeared before the
national TV cameras, no shadow was seen, apart from the
Klieg Lights providing illumination for the TV cameras, and
he was returned to his burrow where he likely ate a little
kibble, sipped a little water and fell back to sleep.
The celebrated groundhog is named after his town of
residence, Punxsutawney Pennsylvania. This one event
each year is the most widely publicized element to ever
emerge from this sleepy town in west-central Pennsylvania.
If the world and the known universe can believe the
prognostication ability of this animal then America could
likely realize an early spring. And, when spring arrives
early, in most American cities that were settled on the banks
of a river, such as Belvidere, the photograph shown here

overweight rodent is correct with his prediction. a major tributary of the Mississippi River as is the Missouri was predicted. By 10 p.m. when she and her date were to

pleased to have two quartets performing in this year’s show. “Velvet Hammer” is our chapter

Our special guest quartet is “Dominant Prep”. Bringing a new sound to barbershop, they

past summer. Because of this year’s theme, 2nd City Chorus and the PAWS Humane Society
have developed a collaborative partnership. The chorus recently performed at the PAWS’s
“Fur Ball” fundraiser, and that organization will be the recipient of a percentage of our
show’s proceeds. Additionally, if attendees donate money or pet food to PAWS that night,
they will be eligible for a special prize drawing. To top off the evening, an “afterglow” will
take place immediately after the concert in the same hall. This will consist of the chorus
and chapter quartets performing a couple of numbers followed by a longer set by the guest
quartet. Appetizers, desserts, coffee and a cash bar will be available. Tickets are $15.00
for the show and $5.00 for the “glow”. These tickets are separate and can be purchased in
