Chief Executive Officer Report to the Regina Qu’Appelle Regional Health Authority
May 27, 2009 Meeting
Achieve Sustainable Quality Services (ST1) Santa Maria Senior Citizens Home • • • • On May 9, 2009, the Board of Directors of Santa Maria resigned their positions. This is to be viewed as a governance issue and not something that should impact resident care or facility staff. The CEO met with Scott Irwin, the CEO of Catholic Health Ministry of Saskatchewan. The Archbishop plans to appoint a new local board shortly. There will also be consideration of a transfer of ownership from the Archdiocese to the Catholic Health Corporation. It is clear, however, that the continued operation of Santa Maria as a faith-based facility is desired by all parties for the future. RQHR and Santa Maria will remain in close and supportive contact through this period of governance transition.
Hospital Acquired Infections (HAI) • • • • The CEO was invited by CUPE to a presentation by Steven Davies, an international expert on the issue of hospital cleaning and its impact on cleanliness and infection control. Mr. Davies is a Senior Research Fellow at Cardiff University in Wales. His message was that hand hygiene is only part of the solution, albeit an important one. Enforcement is more difficult than with good cleaning standards. Research indicates that the health system incurs three times the cost for patients with HAI than those without, so the case is strong for good resourcing, organization and standard-setting for hospital cleaning. Mr. Davies also made a call for hospitals to start measuring and publicly reporting their HAI rates and progress on them.
Patient First Review • • • The CEO, RHA Chair and SMO participated in a Patient First Review Stakeholder Session in Saskatoon on May 13/09. Information was shared around the strengths and problems in the health care system, as well as broad “categories for improvement” that have been identified by both patients and front-line care providers. The information was used to inform a discussion around potential policy development and program initiatives.
Positive, Innovative Environment (ST2) Management Forum • The CEO, several Board members, and approximately 200 staff members attended the spring Management Forum on May 6th at Queensbury Convention Centre.
