Preface
Dear colleagues and students from Asian countries, I heartily welcome all participants to "The 21st International Symposium on Chemical Engineering". The main purposes of the symposium are to educate young chemists about chemical engineering, and also, by means of free discussion throughout the symposium, to create and maintain a network of mutual understanding and trust, not only for the participants, but also for the countries from which they come. These purposes have been stated and achieved at our annual symposia for twenty years. With the current serious worldwide economic depression, we hope that the young generation will pull together and support the global economy from the perspective of engineering development based on chemical engineering. Following on from the 20th anniversary symposium held in Daejeon, Korea, the present symposium will be enriched with more than 140 oral papers and over 100 poster presentations. All of the research to be presented involves the latest advanced topics related to chemical engineering such as biotechnology, energy and resources, environment, and other special issues. The symposium also provides opportunities for participants from different countries to share their knowledge and research experience. Saga Prefecture is located in the northwest part of Kyushu Island and is only 200 km from the Korean Peninsula. It is bounded by both the Sea of Japan and the Ariake Sea. Although one of the smallest prefectures in Japan, it was one of the bases during the Meiji Restoration for the development of technology, including the cannon and the reverberatory furnace. Through the Seven Wise Men of Saga, the Prefecture has also been a centre of political thought and learning. Throughout Japanese history it has played an important role as a gateway for the transmission of culture, and since ancient times has been deeply and strongly influenced by the cultures of other Asian countries. Yoshinogari, now a national park and archaeological site, is known to have thrived in the Yayoi period and to have traded with many other countries. Our Imari and Arita-yaki Pottery, which are now the most famous and distinctive in Japan, originated from Korea. It is my pleasure to invite you our city. I hope that all of you experience and enjoy our culture. You will also enjoy delicious foods such as Saga Beef, Yobuko Squid, Laver (Saga Nori), Ureshino green tea, Ogi sweet beans, Yokan and Japanese Sake etc.
I would like to express my sincere thanks to all the people who prepared the symposium, as well as to the organizations that have generously supported the successful implementation of the symposium: Nippon Sheet Glass Foundation for Materials Science and Engineering, the Saga Sightseeing Association and Saga University.
Yours faithfully,
