Current Position: Consulting Engineer
Idaho National Engineering Laboratory - Idaho Falls, ID
Waste treatment technology research, responsibilities include technical research and project director to
develop waste treatment processes as well as on-going consulting support to environmental
remediation and radioactive waste management activities at the INEEL and other Department of
Energy sites. Current research under direction is in cold-crucible induction melting and steam
reforming with a budget of about $1.5M. Other technical analysis/advisory responsibilities since 1987
include or have included:
• Technical consulting on waste processing, water treatment, soil decontamination and
vitrification, to USDOE sites at Savannah River, Fernald, Ashtabula, and Mound, USEPA,
NIST, IAEA, AECL (Canada), and UKAEA (United Kingdom).
• Forensic design analysis for Pit 9 litigation, responsible for engineering analysis of the multi-
year evolving design for the remediation of Pit 9 TRU wastes and soil contamination. The
results will provide a primary technical resource for use in evaluation of a claim for over
$300M.
• Technical direction and design of the National DOE R&D Program on mixed wastes,
responsible for direction and participation on the panel of technical experts providing analysis
and advice to the Department of Energy on how funding should be allocated and how research
programs should be directed to support waste treatment technology development. The
nationwide R&D program covered all facets of waste characterization and treatment allocating
over $100M over three years.
• Data, technology and strategy analysis for the $2-3B restoration of TRU waste burial and
high-level waste tank-farm sites at the INEEL as Technical Advisor to the Environmental
Restoration Program.
