Your Going Green Cheat Sheet
by Terra Wellington Since most of us live in the fast lane, here’s your quicky cheat sheet for helping your family to go green: Power down – look for anything in your house that can use less power. Make a choice ... use or turn off, set to power-save mode when possible, look for energy saving replacements like Energy Star. Use the smell test – if a household detergent or cleaner has a strong smell, it’s probably not the best choice. Inform yourself ... check the label for warnings, choose non-toxic alternatives, simplify with made-at-home cleansers. Don’t litter – today’s version of anti-litter keeps the planet and your health in mind. Think before tossing or applying ... sort your garbage to avoid landfill waste, start a compost, keep toxic fertilizers and herbicides out of our waterways. Water less – fresh water is limited and expensive to clean, so use less. Make it easy ... install low-flow fixtures and toilets, irrigate gardens with rain barrels or drip systems, and don’t let the water run if you’re not using it. Combine trips – while a hybrid car is great, any car can be part of errand consolidation. Plan ahead ... combine errands on a “route” for the same day, use a grocery shopping list to buy food only once a week, look for errands to run on the way to or from appointments/work.
