Setting up a Belkin wireless router The following instructions are provided to help you set up a router so that you can connect your TiVo DVR to a wireless network. This procedure, and the content of any of the screens shown, may change if the router software is updated. Begin this process with your computer connected to your cable modem or DSL modem. The installer CD will prompt you when it is time to add the router hardware to the system. To set up the router: 1. Insert the installer CD in the drive. When the Welcome screen appears, click Go. 2. Select your country and click Begin. 3. Verify that you have plugged in the equipment as instructed by the Quick Start Guide and then click Next. 4. The installation software does a series of checks and compiles a list of steps that need to be done to complete the router setup. This may take several minutes. When the button becomes available, click Next. 5. Enter a name for your network and click Next. Personalizing your network name is especially important if there are other wireless networks in your neighborhood. You will need to be able to choose your network name when you set up the TiVo DVR to connect to the new network. 6. The router restarts. When the Congratulations screen appears, select Finish – return to Main Menu and then click Next. You are now ready to enable security for the new wireless network. 7. Click Manual Setup. 8. On the Manual Setup screen, click the Open the Settings software link. This opens a web browser window the displays the router status and settings. Notice that your wireless network name is displayed as “SSID”. 9. Click the Security link on the left navigation bar. 10. You are prompted to log into the router. Since you have not yet set up a password, leave this field blank and click Submit. 11. Choose your security setting and click Apply Changes. WPA/WPA2Personal (PSK) is the recommended security setting because it provides the highest level of security. • TiVo DVRs require software version 8.1 or later and must use a TiVo Wireless G adapter to connect to a wireless network that is secured by WPA2 security. If you purchased any other brand of wireless adapter, you must choose WEP security. The TiVo DVR can only connect to a WPA/WPA2enabled wireless network using a TiVo Wireless G adapter. • IMPORTANT: If you just purchased the DVR or received it as a replacement during an exchange, the DVR may need to complete Guided Setup and download a software update before it can connect to a wireless network that is protected by WPA security (for more information, see TiVo software version information). If this is the case, you can set up the router with no security temporarily, and then add security when the DVR receives the update. Instructions on how launch the router configuration program to change settings appear at the end of this procedure. 12. Enter a password and click Apply Changes. (You can leave the authentication and encryption on the default settings.) The wireless password prevents unauthorized use, because any device must send this password to log in before it can connect to your wireless network. You will also need this password to log in to change router settings later, if necessary. IMPORTANT: You will need this password when you set up the TiVo DVR to connect to your network. 13. When the changes are applied, the main menu appears. You can now see that security has been enabled. The router is ready for use. You are now ready to connect your TiVo DVR to the new network. For instructions, go to How to connect a TiVo DVR to your network. Changing router settings You may need to change your router settings after you set up the DVR; for example, if the DVR required a software update before it could connect to a WPA-enabled network. 1. Open a browser window, and type the following into the Address bar: 192.168.2.1. The router’s main menu appears 2. Choose a menu item to configure or change settings for your wireless network. You must enter the password that you created in Step 12 of the previous procedure before you can change any router setting. 3. If you change the network password, or enabled encryption, you will need to change the Network settings on the DVR. For instructions, see Configuring my DVR to connect to my wireless network. NOTE: You will also need to change the network settings on your PC and any other devices on your network that connect wirelessly.
