At the meeting held on May 22, 1905, the purchase made by the sub-
committee was confirmed, and it was agreed to apply for registration
under the Unclassified Friendly Societies Act. Officers and a general
committee were elected, along with sub-committees for each of the four
sports of Bowls, Tennis, Croquet and Billiards. It was agreed to raise an
overdraft of £200 with the Bank of New Zealand, for which three
members would sign as guarantors. Club members were to be asked to
take out debentures.

At subsequent meetings in June and July it was decided that the club
colours would be green and yellow, that the Works committee would
plant trees around the boundaries, and that the Council would be asked
to provide a footpath from the corner of Blackett and Good Streets to the
club’s gate. It would be asked, too, for £3 for a half share of the cost of
fencing along the gravel pit. A windmill was erected for £45, and the
ladies were asked to make a flag, which was duly provided, funded by a
one shilling levy on lady members.

In the space of six months all was set to hold the official Opening Day of
the Rangiora Sports’ Clubs on December 16th 1905 - an event recorded
very fully in the “Lyttelton Times” on December 18th:

“Rangiora Bowling, Tennis and Croquet Clubs”

“The opening of the Rangiora Bowling, Tennis and Croquet Clubs’ new
grounds took place on Saturday afternoon in perfect weather. The
grounds, an acre & a quarter in extent, are situated close to the business
centre of the town, and are in every way excellently adapted to the
purposes of the club. They are laid out in a full size 8 rink bowling green,
2 asphalt and a grass tennis court, and 5 croquet lawns. This leaves
about a quarter of an acre to be brought into use at some future time.
There is a very convenient pavilion, with a large Billiard room fitted up in
a way that leaves nothing to be desired; and a water service that covers
the whole of the ground. Green terraces and tastefully laid out flower
borders complete what will, in a short time, become one of the beauty
spots of the town. The total cost of the property has been about £1000, a
considerable part of which was raised by debentures and the balance by
loan. The membership of the club is about 160 and the number is being
continually added to.
over the edge of the old shingle pit. Daylight had appeared between the
roof and the wall!

The following year alterations were made to join the old and the new
buildings together. Where there had previously been an open verandah
and path between the buildings, a new bar, office, and enlarged kitchen
were established. The Club now enjoyed very adequate facilities to
provide for a growing membership. A period of consolidation followed as
financial resources were restored.

1999 brought another administrative change. In that year, in keeping
with most other Clubs in New Zealand, the Men’s and Women’s Clubs
decided to amalgamate as the Rangiora Bowling Club. Separate men’s
and women’s competitions would continue, but with the opportunity for
mixed and shared events. Socially the Club would operate as one entity
with shared leadership and administration.

In 2005 the club celebrated 100 years of bowls at Rangiora. As
mentioned earlier, there had been bowls played from 1903 but it was
1905 that the Club was formally established. On 8th to 10th of April, past
and present members and invited guests marked the occasion and
renewed friendships, as they played bowls, recalled past activities and
sat down to a Centennial Luncheon.

There was also the anticipation of the completion of a new project to
advance the club. For some years there had been informal, but
intermittent discussion regarding the establishment of an all-weather
synthetic bowling green. At the 2003 Annual General Meeting it was
resolved to proceed with this project. A sub-committee was formed to
research the best surface and to seek funding and the Greengage
synthetic surface was selected. Applications were made for grants from
various Trusts. Generous support was received from local businesses.
When it became clear that a serious shortfall still existed, the sub-
committee enlisted the voluntary assistance of club members led by
those with building expertise. This practical support overcame the
financial hurdle and saved the Club approximately $30 000.00. The
outstanding efforts of those involved culminated in the Official Opening
on 29th April 2006, with the Mayor of Waimakariri, Jim Gerard, and the
local Member of Parliament, Clayton Cosgrove, officiating. The new
green was dept free at the time of its opening
