Borrowing Privileges and Interlibrary Loan
As graduate students you are entitled to “term loan” – books are due in January and May. However titles can be “recalled” by other students after two weeks. Material you need not at Queen’s? Books, journal articles, conference proceedings, theses etc. can be borrowed from other libraries in North America and around the world. See http://library.queensu.ca/services/interlibrary for the RACER request service and information. The Interlibrary Loan office is behind the Circulation Desk on the main floor in Stauffer Library. Material can be picked up at the Circulation Desk or sent via campus mail. The cost of borrowing is subsidized but there is a flat $3.00 charge for journal articles; dissertations range from $25. to $40. and books are free. Queen’s students have borrowing privileges at most university libraries across Canada. However other libraries will not do Interlibary Loan for you. That must be done through Queen’s. See http://library.queensu.ca/services/borrowing/reciprocal

Where are these databases?
▪ from the library’s web menu use Find Articles ▪ select the Databases tab ▪ enter the title of the database or select a subject from the drop‐down list to find relevant databases
Strategy for Effective Searching:
Start your search with the obvious ‘keywords’ or search terms. But also think of synonyms, alternate spellings, other terms or phrases to express the same concepts. Keep a list of the search terms and combinations you’ve tried in the various databases. ie. (merit or incentive or performance) and (pay or salary or wages)
Each database/search platform has different syntax requirements. Phrases may need to be in quotes ie. “mandatory retirement” A ? or * may be used to truncate words or replace letters ie. union* retrieves union, unions, unionization
Most research databases have direct links to full‐text if we subscribe to the journal. Use
to follow links to the text of an article or to QCAT (the library catalogue). In QCAT
use the ‘Journal Title Exact’ option to check if Queen’s Libraries subscribes to the publication. You can save, print or email your search results and articles. Try an online personal database and bibliography creator. See RefWorks under My Account or http://library.queensu.ca/help/refworks
