• Substitution method:
  a method of solving a system of equations by
  replacing one variable with an equivalent
  expression containing the other variable
                        Examples
1. Solve using substitution.
    y=x+6
    y = 3x – 2
Step 1: Choose an equation to use for substitution.

Step 2: Write an equation using only one variable and solve it.
Step 3: Solve for the other variable in either equation.

Check:
2. Solve using substitution.
   y = 2x + 2
   3x + y = 4
3. Solve using substitution.
   -2x + y = -1
   4x + 2y = 12
                      Practice
Solve using substitution.
4a. y  3 x  9           4c.   3 x  6 y  7
     y  2x  4                 5 x  y  10

4b. y  x  7            4d. 4 x  y  12
     3x  y  9              y  4 x  5
