Innovation Situation Questionnaire

1. Brief description of the problem
The purpose of this project is to design a reusable casting apparatus for custom orthotics   which will:
    Reduce shipping costs for Sole Supports Inc.
    Maintain the casting methods used by Sole Supports Inc.
    Be environmentally friendly

2. Information about the system
  2.1 System name
     Reusable Casting Apparatus for Custom Orthotics

 2.2 System structure
      A device that can fit a human foot and is able to conform to that foot and then obtain its
     original shape when needed.

 2.3 Functioning of the system
      The function of the device is to capture the arch of the foot in order to produce a useful
     orthotic.

 2.4 System environment
      Doctor's Office, Orthotic Prosthetic Clinic, Sole Supports Inc. Indoor use, standard room
     temperature. Must be able to be used in dark image scanner environment.

3. Information about the problem situation
  3.1 Problem that should be resolved
     The device needs to be able to be reused while still complying to Sole Supports custom
     method of obtaining foot arch shape.

 3.2 Mechanism causing the problem
     Current foam used can be deformed but does is not able to return to its original shape.

 3.3 Undesired consequences of unresolved problem
     The foam is non-reusable.

 3.4 History of the problem
     The company wants to maintain their unique method of capturing arch structure, and
     therefore must have a material that can capture this in three dimensions. The current foam
     material used was at the time the simplest and most practical, however, in order to save
     money and have an even more efficient product, they are looking for a reusable material.

 3.5 Other systems in which a similar problem exists
     At this time, no other similar problems have been found in this domain.

3.6 Other problems to be solved
     Another problem with the current system is its negative impact on the environment, which
     may be addressed with a reusable material. Also, shipping costs are an issue and may be
     addressed with the new reusable material.
4. Ideal vision of solution
 The new system will be able to be used a large number of times easily returning to its original
 shape when needed. It will be able to capture the structure of the foot arch using the unique
 method designed by Sole Support and will be compatible with their image scanning
 technology. It will also be environmentally friendly and reduce shipping cost.

5. Available resources
  Image Scanner, Sole Supports Inc., Vanderbilt BME Department.

6. Allowable changes to the system
 The material may be radically changed but it must maintain the ability to use Sole Supports
 custom casting technique as well as the ability to function with their image scanner. Their
 technique is their advantage in the marketplace and closely follows their business model and
 therefore should not be altered. If we are able to discover a way for the system to work
 without using the scanners than they would no longer be a requirement.

7. Criteria for selecting solution concepts
 It has to be reusable and must be able to fit all human feet size. It will be biocompatible with
 skin and the new system must save money on shipping cost to be relevant. Ideally, the
 material will obtain its original shape quite easily without supplemental user influence.

8. Company business environment
 Sole Supports makes custom orthotics. Clients are doctors whose patients require these
 orthotics. All manufacturing is done in-house at Sole Supports. Competition includes other
 orthotic manufacturing companies both over the counter and custom built.
