Fitting and showmanship contests are scheduled throughout the afternoon. The judging of market hogs is programmed to start at 8 a.m., Thursday, Aug. 6. This will be followed by the judging of market lambs at 10 a.m., and judging of market beef at 1 p.m. The exhibitor/buyer awards dinner is scheduled for 5 p.m., under the pavilion at the fairgrounds. The show is slated to wrap up Friday, Aug. 7, with the Southern Utah Junior Livestock Show Auction at 9 a.m. This year’s exhibitors will only be allowed to sell one animal per species in the auction ring. Livestock show rules are as follows — 1. All livestock exhibited in the show must be a bona fide 4-H or FFA project and verified by the county agent or the FFA adviser. 2. Any market animal exhibited in this show is required to be owned and cared for by a 4-H or FFA member. Animals must be owned by the youth for the following minimum number of days: beef, 124; lambs, 90; hogs, 90. Market animals must be preweighed and tagged by a show official at the official show preweigh-in. Steers were tagged April 5, with a recommended weight of 750 to 975 pounds. Tagging for lambs and hogs took place May 9, with recommended weights of 40 to 75 pounds for lambs and 50 to 100 pounds for hogs. There will be no change of ownership permitted after animals have been tagged. 3. Only exhibitors from Garfield, Piute, Sevier and Wayne counties in Utah will be eligible to participate in the Southern Utah Junior Livestock Show. 4. Exhibitors will be divided into groups by grade for the fitting and showmanship contests — third through fifth grades, sixth through eighth grades, and ninth through 12th grades. 5. All entries must be on official entry forms complete with name, address and phone number, and turned in at the preweigh-in. 6. All animals will be subject to health inspection. Animals found unhealthy will be removed from the showgrounds. Also, exhibitors found to be in violation of drug use or withdrawal dates or using any unethical animal altering techniques will receive such penalty as deemed appropriate by the committee. 9. At the show, entries will be weighed only once directly off the truck by appointed committeemen. Animals not reaching the minimum weight or exceeding the maximum weight will be sifted, with the exception of lambs and hogs. Lambs may weigh more than 150 pounds, but the participant will only be paid for 150 pounds. Hogs may weigh more than 280 pounds, but the participant will only be paid for 280 pounds.
