general.
As of Q4 2006, Up and coming technology includes applications involving 3D space, office applications, and streaming television / media to your phone. Most phone applications are Java OS based, with many new Flash applications being developed for future features. Current phone application trends include increasing peoples connections to one another (Helio and My Space), and a big push to make the web accessible to cell phones (Flash early versions).
applications.
Music
More and more phones gaining MP3 capabilities. A number of companies are joining together to bring music services to cell phones, like Ericsson and Napster with their planned “Napster-to-Go” service. iTunes is available already on Motorola phones. Apple and Motorola are also in talks to create an iTunes Store-like service for cell phones “Side-Loading” – the process of sending downloaded MP3s from your PC to your Cell Phone. This is the industry standard way to get music on to a cell phone. Unfortunately, some phones and PCs are incompatible, creating roadblocks for some users Interaction/Accessibility to music varies from phone to phone, as well as format compatibility. It’s basically a mixed bag Size limits on phones don’t allow huge collections of songs like on traditional MP3 players. The Motorola SLVR L7, for instance, is loaded with iTunes software, but is limited to only 100 songs The LG LX550 is one of the highest rated multimedia capable phones available
applications con’t.
Instant Messaging and Email
IM (instant messaging) is the exchanging of written messages via cell phone. Much like MSN Messenger or AOL on a computer. SMS (short message service is the official name for texting. If a phone is email/IM capable, then it usually will come with an application to use. Users key the phones alpha/numerical keys to type message. Some phones can access a preexisting email account and download to the phone for reading or email is sent to phone’s own special email address. Some/most newer phones can send media files via IM/email

visual/interface.
The buttons are still very rectangular. Traditional look and layout. This phone starts to get into the iconic style, but the icons are based on the Microsoft system.
The new Blackberry Pearl is tiny! Again, it uses the Microsoft style icons although it is pulling away from the menu/list style and relying heavily on icons.
This Cingular phone has a huge amount of screen space and could be doing some great graphics work, but instead they rely on the old menu/list style for navigation. There is a small amount of icons used.
This phone starts to use icons, but they are not used well. In one, the background is square while the graphic is circular.
This phone is better it mixes iconic and list systems. the icons are again of Microsoft decent and not very original. they are recognizable.
