Noorulain Syed Language Project Language Manipulative Games/Activities An alien is here! A friendly creature visits you from another planet. You do not know each other’s language, but you are eager to show him around the planet Earth. Think about what you would show the alien about life on Earth. Things of nature? Human-made things? Make a list of ten things you would like to show to the alien: My top 10 things to show to the alien: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. 10. Word Builder: In the Word Builder activity, your children combine sound segments to make words. When a target word is formed, the teacher should speak the sound segments and then pronounce the whole word. Teacher should have picture cards with missing letters. Sound Scavenger Hunt: This activity develops your child's ability to recognize and remember speech sounds. 1. Choose a sound for the child to remember. Start with one sound at a time and progress to four at a time. For kindergartners, start with M, B, T and D. For first graders, use any sounds except S, SH, CH or R. 2. Tell your child that s/he is going on a sound hunt. Child must find one item in the house/classroom that includes each sound (you can specify the size the item has to be, so they're not dragging furniture around). Give your child a specific timeframe in which to collect the item(s). 3. When the child returns with all items, review the sound connected to each item. 4. After children are successfully remembering sounds and finding items, you can do the follow up activity over the next days and weeks: Each time your child hears a word that contains a sound from the scavenger hunt, and can repeat the word or describe the item to you, s/he scores a point. You can record points with stars or stickers on a chart toward some designated reward. Musical Song Hush-a-bye, Baby. Flannel Board Story Idea Five Little Snowman Finger play added Make the appropriate pieces and place them on the board as you read. 5 little Snowman standing in a row, Each had a hat and a big red bow. Out came the sun and it shone all day, 1 Little snowman melted away. 4 Little Snowman standing in a row, Each had a hat and a big red bow. Out Came the the sun and it shone all day, 1 Little snowman melted away. Disappearing Snowman Cookies Make the appropriate pieces and place them on the board as you read. Five cookie snowmen sitting on a tray. Five cookie snowman smiling all day. Along came a little child, rubbing his tummy. One cookie disappeared, Yum, Yum, Yummy!! Repeat to all the cookies are gone. Cooking Activity 1. Decorate Snowman Cookies Things Required: Snowman shape cookies White Icing Tubes Colored Icing Tubes for snowman scarf M&Ms for button Procedure: Spread white icing on the base. Make a scarf around the neck with the color icing tube. Use orange color icing tube for the carrot nose. Use M&M to make eyes. 2. Make Smart Chick Cookies Read them the book one smart chick or any other chicken book and then have a cooking activity that is making their own smart chicks. Things Required: Small and big round crackers Cheese-it triangles Cheese-it sticks Cheddar Cheese Spread M&M for eyes Procedure: Spread cheese on both small and big round crackers. Place the small cracker half way on the big one. Place the cheese-it sticks in place of legs, M&M in place of eyes, one triangle cheese-it in place of beak, and one triangle cheese-it for a wing. Yummy Spaceship: You can make a model of the space shuttle. This is a model that you can eat. What you need:          Plate Bread Cooked hot dog that is still warm (a long hot dog works best) Cheese slice Plastic knife or toothpick Two sticks of string cheese Ketchup in a squeeze bottle Mustard in a squeeze bottle Shuttle cookie cutter or orbiter cutout Here's what you do: Always wash your hands before cooking and eating. 1. Put your bread on your plate. Use the cookie cutter to cut out your orbiter shape. (Or print out the orbiter cutout and cut it out with scissors. Then put the cutout on the bread and cut around it with the plastic knife.) 2. Cut the cheese slice into a thin strip and lay it on the orbiter. 3. Put the warm hot dog on top so that the cheese will melt. This will help the hot dog stick to the bread. 4. Turn the hot dog and orbiter over onto the plate. Lay a cheese stick on each side of the hot dog. 5. Squirt ketchup and mustard under the orbiter. Use the toothpick to make it look like flames. Once there was a Little Red Hen who lived in a barnyard with her three chicks and a duck, a pig and a cat. One day the Little Red Hen found some grains of wheat. "Look look!" she clucked. "Who will help me plant this wheat?" "Not I", quaked the duck, and he waddled away. "Not I", oinked the pig, and he trotted away. "Not I, meowed the cat, and he padded away. "Then I will plant it myself," said the Little Red Hen. And she did. When the wheat was tall and golden, the Little Red Hen knew it was ready to be cut. "Who will help me cut the wheat?" she asked. "Not I," said the duck. "Not I," said the pig. "Not I," said the cat "Then I will cut this wheat myself". And she did. "Now", said the Little Red Hen, "it is time to take the wheat to the miller so he can grind it into flour. Who will help me?" "Not I," said the duck. "Not I," said the pig. "Not I," said the cat. "Then I will take the wheat to the miller myself," said the Little Red Hen. And she did. The miller ground the wheat into fine white flour and put it into a sack for the Little Red Hen. When she returned to the barnyard, the Little Red Hen asked, "Who will help me make this flour into dough?" Not I," said the duck, the pig and the cat all at once. "Then I will make the dough myself," said the Little Red Hen. And she did. When the dough was rready to go into the oven, the Little Red Hen asked, "Who will help me bake the bread?" "Not I," said the duck. "Not I," said the pig. "Not I," said the cat. "Then I wll bake it myself," said the Little Red Hen. And she did. Soon the bread was ready. As she took it from the oven, the Little Red Hen asked, "Well who wil help me eat this warm, fresh bread?" "I will," said the duck. "I will," said the pig. "I will," said the cat. "No you won't," said the Little Red Hen. "You wouldn't help me plant the seeds, cut the wheat, go to the miller, make the dough or bake the bread. Now, my three chicks and I will eat this bread ourselves!" And that's just what they did. And the moral of this story is................. Don't expect anyone to help you. They will wait until there is no work to be done and no risk to be taken. They will step up and expect you to share with them as if they helped you. duh! Dramatic Play Center Idea: Make Discovery Center and have different stalls for like NASA, Center for Archaeologists, etc. Things I will have are: Lots of books on different topics related for both stalls and science discovery books in general, lots of paper, pencils, rulers, colors, dry erase boards, lab coats, some sort of astronaut outfit, tools for digging, sand table with plastic bones and other fossil creatures they can discover, rocks, magnifying glasses, dinosaurs models, spaceship models, rockets, comets, solar system, planet models, fake computers or old computer, paper/hardboard robots, microscope, masks, teacher made oxygen tanks or play oxygen tanks, telescopes, satellite, globe, maps, pictures, theme related games, the related word wall.. G. Hennessy (Author), Susan Davis (Author) I would have laminated pictures in the box and take them out as I read the story. Puppet Sock Puppet All you need to do is start with a sock. 1. Put the sock on your hand so that your fingers and thumb are in the toe and the back of your wrist is in the heel. 2. To make room for your puppet's mouth, make a slit in the sock between your thumb and fingers. 3. Cut an oval 3 inches across and 5 inches long...make that 2 ovals, one of posterboard or milk bottle plastic-something semi rigid and one of fabric. 4. Glue the fabric oval to the posterboard (rigid) oval with white glue. 5. After the glue has begun to dry, fold them in half the short way. 6. Sew folded oval into your sock. Finally, your puppet can talk. 7. Now the fun begins! What your puppet becomes depends on you. Think eyes, hair, ears, hats, moustaches, beards, eyebrows, noses, collars, neckties, shirts and dresses. Parent Literacy Bag Stick Puppet: Parents can make stick puppets with kids and then play them on songs, stories etc. It is a fun activity to do with kids. I will have sketches, colors, popsicle sticks, hardboard in the bag.       Start by printing the pattern Cut it out and trace it on the cardboard. Cut out the cardboard bear and glue to paper bear. Color the bear anyway you wish. Glue to the stick. Have your bear sing a song. Books: Parents can use these book and talk to kids how other creatures live, etc. These books talk about everyday things kids would see in their home, something they can make connection to. How Do Dinosaurs Clean Their Rooms? by Jane Yolen (Author), Mark Teague How Do Dinosaurs Say Goodnight? by Jane Yolen (Author), Mark Teague (Illustrator) Music: This website has a huge music library that parents can use to play songs for their kids. It has all kids of songs like alphabets, animals, season, and other themes. http://falcon.jmu.edu/~ramseyil/songs.htm Interactive Story Idea I choose this book “Me and my senses by Joan Sweene”. I would explore our different senses with the kids like touching, smelling, tasting. I would have different kinds of material to touch both sweet and salty stuff to taste, etc. So basically we will experience our different senses as we read the story.
