Prepare Now for Hands-Free Cell Phone Use While Driving
Law also prohibits minors from using a cell phone while driving – including hands-free devices!
Effective July 1, 2008, it will be illegal in the state of California for drivers to use a cell phone while operating a motor vehicle unless the driver uses a hands-free device. Minors (those under 18 years of age) are prohibited from driving using a cell phone, including a hands-free device, and/or a mobile service device (pagers, texting devices, laptops, etc). Drivers who violate the law will face a base fine of $20 for a first offense and $50 for each subsequent offense. The law allows drivers to use a wireless telephone for emergency purposes, drivers of commercial vehicles to use push-to-talk phones until July 1, 2011, and allows drivers of emergency response vehicles to use a cell phone without a hands-free device. Don’t Forget to Add Text Messaging to Your Phone Services Package
Verizon raises pay-per-text cost to $.20 for those without a package
It’s a common misconception that text messaging (or other features or services) comes with your phone service. But there are a couple of things that you should know: 1) You must call and ADD a text messaging package (or any other new feature) in order to receive its benefits. Sign up for an Unlimited Text Messaging package with SDW to avoid higher prices. For those Verizon customers who do not have a text messaging package, Verizon plans to raise the rate for payper-use text to $.20 each as of March 2, 2008. 2) Unlimited text messaging only applies to other customers on your current network carrier, and is not unlimited to customers who aren’t on your network. Each Unlimited Text package comes with additional, non-network text messages per month, but the amount depends on the level of your service package. If you aren’t sure what carriers the people you text are using, we do not recommend an unlimited text package. Cingular and Verizon now offer unlimited texting to people on the same network -- the packages start at $10 month.
