The castles of the Dukes of Britanny
WElCOM TO nAnTEs
Nestled along the mighty Loire river, Nantes has a rich historical heritage. It was the home of the famous writer Jules Verne, the residence of Anne of Brittany and a key 18th century trading port. Its charming cobbled street, the old 15th century houses and the city's stunning Castle and Cathedral serve as a reminder of its glorious past. But Nantes is more than just history; its lively art scene and growing student population keep his this city alive and young.
ThE CITy | dO & sEE dESTINATION: NANTES
ThE CITy Nantes, France's sixth-largest city, lies on the Loire estuary in the west of France, some 50 kilometres from the Atlantic coast. A former commercial and maritime centre of Brittany, the city boats a strong historical and cultural heritage. Nantes was the capital of the independent duchy of Brittany back in the Middle Ages and came to be a key trading port in the 18th century, thanks to its strategic position at the Loire, Erdre and Sevre rivers. Today, the city remains a prosperous and popular part of Western France. Its impressive Chateau, the cobbled streets and the charming half-timbered houses in the medieval Bouffay quarter still remind visitors of Nantes' glamorous past. But the city has more to offer than just history. It boasts a lively art scene, a strong culinary background as well as a thriving and young nightlife - thanks not least to its nearly 50,000-strong student population. dO & sEE CAThEdRAlE sAInT PIERRE sAInT PAul This impressive cathedral is home to the tombs of Francois II, the last duke of Brittany, and his second wife Marguerite de Foix.
