Control of cell cycle – continued

Growth factor – proteins produced by other cells to induce cell division
     More specific name = mitogens

Density dependent inhibition – when cells touch each other at their borders, they stop dividing
Communicate this through proteins in cell membrane
Due to diminishing supplies of growth factors and nutrients

Anchorage dependence – cells must be attached to a substratum in order to divide

Transformation – normal cell converted to cancer cell

If transformed cells stay in original site = benign tumor

If transformed cells move from original site and invade and disrupt functions of organs =
malignant tumor  cancer

Metastasize – malignant tumor cells that lost their attachment to other cells and spread
throughout the body through the blood stream and lymphatic system
