      "Seminar on Business Ethics and Corporate Social Responsibility"
                        held on January 27, 2006
                          at Hotel Hyatt Regency


Nepalese Young Entrepreneurs' Forum (NYEF) in association with FNCCI Anti
Corruption Project (FCAP) jointly organized a "Seminar on Business Ethics and
Corporate Social Responsibility" on January 27, 2006 at Hotel Hyatt Regency.
The young participants from different business sectors, the members and
potential members of the NYEF participated in the program. All together 55
participants attended the program.

 Mr. Jayendra Das Shrestha, General Secretary of NYEF hosted the program. On
behalf of NYEF, he welcomed all the participants and the guest speakers. The
first speaker of the program Mr. Mukunda Bahadur Pradhan, Project Manager-
FCAP spoke on "What is corruption? How corruption originated? Ways to get out
of the Corruption cycle and Corruption in Nepal". He also highlighted the anti
corruption movements and activities conducted by the FNCCI Anti Corruption
Project. Speaking on the occasion, he informed participants that Corruption is
considered as 3rd major problem that today's world is facing after
Malnutrition/ Hunger and Contagious Diseases problem.

He further stated that in today's world, corruption resides everywhere, whether
it is developed or under developed and developing country. But in comparison
to developed countries, the level of corruption is high in under developed and
developing countries. Corruption can be found in different forms in various
sectors, be it in politics, social or business. Stating that corruption has its own
cycle which encircles unemployment, low resource mobilization, poverty, low
living standards, Mr. Pradhan also said that corruption blocks and badly affects
the development of the country. He informed that the corruption is one of the
biggest problems in Nepal. Nepal stands at 94th position among the list of 146
countries where the rate of corruption is higher.

Mr. Pradhan also informed about various anti corruption initiatives initiated by
different Government, Non Government and Private Agencies in Nepal. One of
such initiative is FNCCI Anti Corruption Project (FCAP), initiated by the FNCCI
Corporate Ethics Forum with cooperation of Enabling State Program (ESP)/DFID.
The aim of FACP is to reduce corruption and promote a clean, dignified and
transparent business sector in the nation. In context of reducing corruption in
nation, FACP has also formulated the Business code of conduct on November
26-27 during the 38th AGM of the FNCCI. He also informed about the study
research done by FACP in different countries like Vietnam, Philippinese.

The second presentation was on Corporate Social Responsibility by Dr.
Chiranjivi Nepal, Senior Consultant of FNCCI. Dr. Nepal emphasized on
importance of entrepreneurship, the corporate social responsibility, its
components/ CSR policies, and the importance of CSR in today's world.

Giving the presentation, he stated that the rapid globalization, IT revolution,
industrial structure change, declining birth rate are the four mega trends which
business corporations are facing today. He also stated customer, competition
and change as the 3 important Cs which have changed the philosophy of the
today's business corporation.

He emphasized the importance of entrepreneurship and role of young
entrepreneurs in the development of the nation. He further defined innovation
as the specific tool of entrepreneurs through which they exploit change as an
opportunity for a different business or different service. According to him,
opportunity and the necessity are the two major entrepreneurship driving
factors. A successful entrepreneur is that who creates new and different
values and satisfactions to convert a material into a resource or to combine
existing resources in a new and more productive configuration.

Stating business as an important part of the society, Dr. Nepal also described
the multidimensional role of business as a wealth generator and as a promoter
of social. The liberalized market environment has changed the character of
business relationship with the society.

He stated that Corporate Social Responsibility is the commitment from business
enterprise towards sustainable economic development, creating good working
environment for employee/ their families and local community / society
welfare at large to improve the quality of life. He also emphasized on the
point that employees should be put as business’ best assets and ambassadors.
He described employee, share holders, customers, government, civil society
and environment concerns as important components of the CSR. He further
added that any action by the company which is either preventive or proactive
is an act of CSR.

Mr. Megnath Neupane, Executive Director of FNCCI was the third and last
speaker of the program. Giving the presentation, Mr. Neupane spoke on the
business ethics and values, the growing importance of business ethics,
initiatives taken by FNCCI for promoting business ethics and also the complaint
hearing unit. Mr. Neupane said that business is not only the organization or
institution engaging in trade; it is also the act of engaging in the profession
which involves all the actions related to the occupation whether that is as a
retail, merchant, doctor or teacher. Stating the business ethics as the
composition of individual ethics and social values, beliefs and norms, he
briefed about the major reasons behind the formation of business ethics and
increasing concern towards corporate ethics.

He informed about the initations taken by FNCCI to reduce the business
corruption and to make people aware about the CSR and business code of
conduct and ethics. Complaint Hear – Unit (CHU) is one of such initiation taken
by the FNCCI Anti corruption project under Corporate Ethics forum (CEF). CHU
is a self declaration scheme and voluntary service unit started by FNCCI. The
CHU is responsible for collecting / examining complain from District Chamber
of Commerce and Industry / FNCCI and forwarding the complains to CEF or the
related sectors. CHU will collects and classifies complains from different
sectors like business, government, political and civils but it will not collect
individual complains. CHU is an ethical tool and mechanism to develop sound
business practices, which helps to minimize the corruption in the long run.

After the presentation session, the floor was made open for the discussion
session. Participants raised different queries relating to various issues like CSR
in Nepal, women entrepreneurship, globalization and mega trends, corruption
and corporate ethics. All the three key speakers gave the fruitful and
satisfying answer to the queries raised by the participants with some
interesting examples.

Mr. Vinayak Prasad, 2nd VP of NYEF delivered the vote of thanks. On behalf of
NYEF, he thanked the FNCCI Anti Corruption project and project team member
for the support extended. He also thanked all the 3 key speakers for their
informative and interesting presentation.

Feed Backs from the participants: (collected through assessment forms)

The majority of the participants stated that the seminar topics were
relevant and such type of program will help them in their works. The
program was informative and the presenters were good.         All the
participants enjoyed the program. The participants were very much
satisfied with the overall management of the program.


Suggestions:

   NYEF should organize more such programmes in other cities too.
   More interaction programs required
   Conduct this type of program at Campus level
