Project Overview
1.1 The Questionnaire Survey
This summary report relates to the Healthy Living and Lifestyle section of the Quarter 2 2005 Citizens' Panel Survey which was distributed to panel members in June/July 2005. It is accompanied by full data cross-tabulations of the results. The questionnaire for the survey was sent out w/c 30 May 2005. Reminder questionnaires were sent out to non-responders w/c 13 June and the cut-off date for returned questionnaires was 8 July 2005. The survey contained questions on the following topics:       Internet Use Council Communications Cobwebs Community Directory Healthy Living and Lifestyle School Meals Profile Questions

Some of the questions asked in the Healthy Living and Lifestyle section were asked in order to replicate questions asked by the Sports Council for Wales. It is worth noting some percentage figures on this report are rounded up or down to the nearest whole number and therefore some consolidated percentages may not total exactly 100%. For example, 50.4 would be shown as 50% and 50.6 would be shown as 51%.

1.2 Survey Response
The survey was distributed to all 1,350 panel members, however as 39 questionnaires were returned as failed mail, the effective distribution was to 1,311 panel members. 714 completed questionnaires were returned yielding a response rate of 54%. Although the profile of the overall panel is broadly representative of the population of the Bridgend County Borough area, the returned sample to any individual survey can be unbalanced due to non-response by certain panel members. Therefore, the survey results are, where necessary, weighted to correct any imbalances in the returned sample. The survey data can then be considered to be representative of the local population. The data for this survey has been weighted by age and local forum area and the details of the un-weighted response and the weighted representation in the data are detailed in Appendix 1.

2.1 Smoking and Drinking
Respondents were asked about their current smoking and drinking habits.    14% said they currently smoked cigarettes 32% said they had given up smoking (most of whom - 68% - had given up more than 5 years ago) and 55% had never smoked.

Of those who do currently smoke, around a fifth (19%) are light smokers, smoking 5 or less a day; four-in-ten (40%) smoke 10 a day; 35% smoke 20 a day and 6% smoke more than 30 a day. In addition, 2% said they currently smoked other tobacco products (such as cigars or a pipe), 12% had previously smoked these products and 86% had never done so. In terms of drinking alcohol, four fifths of respondents drank some alcohol in a typical week, with most being light or moderate drinkers (Figure 2.1.1). 7% said they drank 21 or more units a week - the heavier drinkers were more likely to be male and aged 16-34:

For each day asked about, around half the respondents said they exercised for ½ an hour or more and around a quarter said they exercised for an hour or more. The pattern of exercising did not differ significantly by day, other than for Sundays when more people did no exercise at all. Between 15% and 21% did no exercise on any individual day at all, and around 25%-30% exercised for 15 minutes or less. In comparison to 'a typical week', just under a quarter (23%) said they usually took more exercise than this, 5% said they usually did less and over two-thirds (68%) said they usually did about the same amount (Table 2.2.2):

Just under a quarter of respondents gave an ‘other’ answer, not tabled above; these answers are listed in Appendix 2. 39% said there were other activities or types of exercise that they would like to take part, or take part in more often. The activities mentioned are listed in Appendix 2. The main reasons why these people did not currently take part in these other activities were a lack of time (48%), the lack of availability, ‘none round here’ (27%) and the cost ‘too expensive’ (22%) - Table 2.2.4:

2.3 Lifestyle Changes to Improve health
We asked respondents how likely they thought each of a number of possible actions would be to improve a person’s health - Figure 2.3.1 shows that the majority of people thought that all the possible courses of actions would improve a person’s health - particularly stopping smoking (97% said it was ‘likely to improve health, including 95% who said it was ‘very’ likely to do so). Eight in ten thought that taking moderate exercise would be very likely to improve a person’s health:
